I don't understand why there's this name for women who prefer younger men. Loads of men prefer younger women, but they don't get labelled, do they?

I think Cougar stems from an American television series called Cougar Town, in which a mature woman begins dating younger men.

I think the name came before the series. It's a bit pathetic, either way.

Nah, I agree, I thought the same after I wrote it - not exactly the same.  TBH though, if one was of a mind to be offended by such things, Sugar Daddy is arguably more dubious.  I know I'd rather be likened to a stylish big cat than a sweet father figure anyway.
