Number 10 has warned against a "trial by Twitter" over sexual abuse claims after David Cameron was handed a list of suspects on live television.

The fresh warning came after Mr Cameron expressed fears about a "witch hunt" of gay people after he was questioned about the claims during an interview.

He was given a list of suspected paedophiles by Phillip Schofield when he appeared on ITV's This Morning, where he was appearing to talk about dementia.

Schofield, who said he had found the names on a quick trawl of the internet, came under fire after accidentally exposing the list on camera as it was handed over.

Mr Cameron did not look at it and put it on the table, before raising concerns about internet speculation over who might be embroiled in historic cases.

"There is a danger if we are not careful that this can turn into a sort of witch hunt, particularly about people who are gay, and I'm worried about the sort of thing you are doing right now, taking a list of names off the internet," he told Schofield.

Talking 10 to the dozen to avoid having to give a straight answer. He was pretty uncomfortable wasn't he? Kudos to Philip for handing him the names - apparently the names were visible on the screen. I couldn't read them Tom Watson tweeted 'job done' - hmmmmmmm - do you think it was planned?

He did mention Tom Watson too didn't he. I didn't see the names on screen Soozy but how slippery did Cameron come across? He was as you said talking at the speed of light to the point he was rude to Holly 'saying 2 seconds' so he could finish his well rehearsed shpeel!

I noticed that and thought he was pig ignorant, he came across as a right tw8t..I still think this will be all covered up....

Savile was a sick individual.

If he thought something illegal was going on, why did he report it to the BBC? Why didn't he report it to the police?

And if he suspected illegal activity and didn't report it: shouldn't he be investigated - and perhaps even prosecuted?

This explosive video from a few years ago has re-surfaced on the internet. He who knows where all the bodies are buried, the tabloid publicist Max Clifford, names Alan Clark as one of the alleged Tory paedophiles. Boasting  about how he made the Harkesses a lot of money – Valerie the then 57-year-old wife of James Harkess, her daughters Josephine, 34 sister Alison, 36 – for their tale of the seduction of all three by Clark:

“The only slightly serious side about it was he’d actually interfered with those girls from the age of fourteen.”

Clifford goes on to boast that: “I’ve got all the evidence. I’m the one who’s hidden it from the world. I know where everything is and the proof is”. Words he may come to regretâ€Ķ

Will this appear in the tabloids? Don’t count on it, Max is close to editors. He trades stories with them, suppressing stories about a clients who wants to keep secrets for a stories about clients who wants the limelight. Max has plenty he wants to keep hiddenâ€Ķ

I think it's no secret here that I'm no friend of Cameron or the tories, but that stunt this morning was wrong. He was there to talk about dementia and had no time to study that list. He did look at it, albeit briefly and, like some of us, had seen it before and saw names we might associate with homosexuals. We all remember the pediatrician being hounded by ppl who thought she was a peadophiles. Aides was a gay disease until we were enlightened. He raised a perfectly valid point.

I applaud This Morning!! As someone said up there^ (i think it velvet) If only someone had the balls to do something similar to Savile. At least now the PM can't say he didn't know the rumours as we have it on film him being given the information that's circulating the domain of free speech... thank goodness for the internet!

Yes but these things become mob mentality so quickly. I thought we all wanted justice for the victims, not victimise anybody who may be mentioned on a media which is difficult to police. This Morning is a magazine programme and should have stayed within it's brief today (sorry yesterday). Free speech by all means, but if that jeopardises any potential trials and sentencing, we have sacrified it on the altar of everybody needs to know everything.

I have looked back at clips of it on youtube and i cant make out names from the blur of ink as it's passed across. I say let those written on that card sue ITV... if they are innocent they will, then again if it's used as a weapon in court to 'get off'... well imo that will speak louder than the voice of every victim put together.

I really hope this has gone beyond hiding behind legal red tape and brushing it all under the carpet, way too many childhoods scared are now in the public domain... as i said before, you gotta love the internet!

on a side note, Cameron didnt read the names yet he mentioned a gay witch hunt..... the whole thing is just vile

There you go. You have those ppl guilty without trial. They are perfectly entitled to protest if they have nothing to do with it. If we all thought like you, they never would or could.

On the Cameron point, he freely admitted to having seen the names bandied about.

I'm with you Jen..no way was Cameron hyjacked, everything is cleared with their people and the list was on ITV paper, I've gone over the clip and no way was the names ever to be seen..this uproar about Philip is the Tory's way of deflecting the damage that Cameron caused when he went back to the dark ages yesterday and blurted out the ridiculous *gay witch hunt* is he that stupid that he thinks only gay men can only be paedophiles, the man is a buffoon and should learn paedophiles come in all shapes, forms, sexes and ages....

I agree with Carnelian, it would be lovely if this turned out to be Tory-centric especially after the way they've used the subject to make one of their regular attacks on our BBC. However I think that when our grandchildren find out what actually occurred they will discover politicians of all colours, members of the judiciary and police, social and security services, showbiz and terrorists.

Nope that's not what I'm saying. If someone who's name was on that list isn't happy about it and are innocent what do you think they would do? Me? I'd be really angry and drag whoever associated me with such things through every court in the land......

What i wouldn't do is say nothing now and wait until i was on trial for the things they said i had done and use the whole thing as a 'get out jail free card' (which is what i assumed you meant by 'but if that jeopardises any potential trials and sentencing, we have sacrified it on the altar of everybody needs to know everything.') That is what i meant would speak volumes.

As for Cameron not reading the names i obviously got that bit wrong lol

Jen how do you know that the people on the lists but not actually connected to the child abuse or sexual abuse charges aren't at this very moment trying to get injunctions etc. .those are done in camera so no one knows   for sure. .

To go public may further jeopardise their potions as further trials by media are carried out..

it seriously needs all this salacious gossip stuff to stop now, especially by those with other motives other than wanting to help victims, ie bring down parliament/police/BBC/anyone in authority which some of the extreme ones/bloggers seem to want to do.. . .it's well and truly out there now so they can't hide any investigations anymore. .they need to get back to the real victims and start looking for prosecution evidence.

The man who was party treasurer under Margaret Thatcher said that a "media frenzy" meant he had no choice but to "publicly tackle these slurs and set the record straight" in a statement released to the Press Association on Friday morning, the day after the Guardian reported that new evidence suggested McAlpine was a victim of "mistaken identity".

It really is a witchhunt now!!!

Seriously though I agree totally with Olly. The discussion on the internet / in the media has burst the whole thing wide open and hopefully victims now know they will be taken seriously and not be dismissed. When it gets conspiracy theorish and hysterical then it goes too far and sort of detracts from the gravity of the situation and doesn't help the victims as far as I can see.

 Very apt!

Not sure what you agree with, but it may be a post on the other thread. This is getting confusing now.

Well done on your 'going out', btw.
