Seems like he was reported - god only knows how many times. It looks like the 'cover up' went on for years.

In the Sunday Telegraph:

'Jimmy Savile was investigated by police at least six times'

Inquiries by The Sunday Telegraph show Savile first escaped justice in Leeds in 1958. Savile was investigated by police over sexual assault allegations, according to his former minder at the time. Dennis Lemmon, now 80, recalled Savile, who at the time ran a nightclub, being in a bad mood because he faced a court hearing the next day for β€œinterfering with young girls”.

Mr Lemmon told The Sunday Telegraph β€œHe was really worried but everything was dropped. I was told he paid them [the police] off. And apparently that wasn’t the first time either but I don’t know about that. He had a lot of friends though.”

My question is, what type of corporation were the BBC running?..It seemed like it was "Open Season" if you were a young woman working there at the time..Some of the things I've read over the past weeks have turned my stomach...

I can't even describe the revulsion I feel every time I see a picture of the sick bastard Jimmy Saville...

I don't accept the feeble excuse of it being "Just how it was in those days"...You can't blame the overtly sexist and sick behaviour on the 70's..It was more to do with the fact, these people had power, money, status, influence, and they abused those priveleges over and over again..At this present moment I resent paying my TV license fee..

I've been following the debate elsewhere and apparently in Toryland if one doesn't wish to see the BBC closed down, then one is equally as guilty of the crimes. However my favourite post was this one..............

"Police investigated, found nothing, took no action: Not their fault.

Hospitals gave Savile 24 hour access to vulnerable patients despite nurses having serious concerns: Not their fault.

Broadmoor gave Savile a set of keys and a house on site giving him 24 hour access to vulnerable patients: Not their fault.

Approved school allows their children to ride in Savile's car on trips out alone. Not their fault.

Government gave Savile formal position again giving him power and access where the most basic screening and background checks would have found huge problems: Not their fault.

News media including Sun, NOTW, DM etc knew of many rumours but did no investigation: Not their fault.

BBC eventually did confront Savile, did cooperate with Police, they and Police found no evidence: Totally THEIR FAULT!  BURN DOWN THE BBC! Arm yourselves with pitchforks!! "

SINNER, after seeing the programme about him and hearing all the stories coming out about him since then it's clear that this guy was an evil sick horrible little man.

HOWEVER, I still think some people who are accusing him of abusing them are making it up to jump on this soon to be cash cow bandwagon, but most of these people coming forward are clearly telling the truth and it's obvious that he has been doing this for decades.

Perhaps they should be reminded that he got his knighthood thanks to the Torys, and during Thatcher's premiership he celebrated every New Year as a guest of hers at Chequers...

I heard a snippet on the radio this evening, (when I was paying for petrol), and the news was saying that a man had now come forward saying he was abused by JS after an appearance on Jim'll Fix It.  The news described him as a 'scout' at the time, and I thought 'I bet it was one of those who ate their lunch on the Revolution'.  Irrelevant I know, but I just thought I'd say.

Cinds

I feel sick and angry at seeing pics of JS on the news, I'm now turning over every time they mention him as we've all learnt the truth now. Personal opinion but it's time to move forward as nothing will change the past. If there's people alive that are/have been molesting boys or girls the police need to be made aware of them, not the Press, the police. Hopefully what's come to light from so many will encourage now those who've been abused by anyone who's still alive.  Fame or money should play no part in the justice system, truth should. Anyone who's hidden behind fame or money should be outed and brought to justice. Now that so many have spoken out about JS the only good that can come from this is that the vermin with the same mentality as him will be forced out of hiding.

These people should be made an example of it caught! It reminds me of the woman who said she was in the twin towers, 10 yrs later the press uncover the truth.... she was no where near it at the time....

Until it's proved that some are lying, I'd rather presume that they are all being truthful. After six decades of him having unfettered access to youngsters, I'd be expecting a hell of a lot more to come forward and we need to start off by taking their accounts seriously. If we start doubting them, many, many people will bury their hurt and shame even deeper.

I agree Blizzie...six decades, I bet there are dozens if not hundreds that will be still wary of saying what happened to them

I KNOW this case is rather damning . . . but if the law was to be applied sensibly and fairly in all cases then presumption should not get in the way of investigaion

Because, if you don't start off by believing people who come forward with accusations of this nature, we've seen exactly what happens - victims don't report it, or give up, having not been believed in the first place, and 'Jimmy Savilles' everywhere carry on doing whatever they please.

I hear wot you say Blizzworthiness BUT . . .

Sometimes - just sometimes people lie (surely not in this case -  i know)

Rather should we not say,

"We will not judge you - we will take you seriously and look into this with a totally open mind when previously you were not believed"

Its a scarey prospect that those that choose to lie hear people saying all allegations will be believed.

We presume that they are telling the truth, until we find reason to doubt them. It's imperative that victims feel that they will be believed.

It's taken us long enough to get to the stage where the police are taught to start with that presumption and still there are huge numbers of victims who are still scared to report it. Let's not go backwards!

Absolutely, and I'm not a fan of that either.

The point here is whether victims feel that they will be believed, when they report rape, or other sexual assaults. If they don't, the statistics will get even worse. Obviously, the police need to investigate and the CPS need to judge whether it has any chance in court, but we have to start off believing victims, imo. Too many offenders have been able to get away with it for years, just because their many individual victims were not believed, or not taken seriously.
