I've never used miso paste 

I keep going through phases of using it as a soup starter (also thought of taking sachets in to work), but have never used it in cooking...

Is it spicy Eugene ?

Not really, but it is salty.

Also, miso is one of those things that is "umami" - that fifth, meaty, taste.
