It would appear that the identity of Jack the Ripper has finally been revealed thanks to a DNA test carried out on a shawl belonging to one of the victims, Catherine Eddowes.

I remain sceptical about it, not least because that shawl looks as though it has just been returned from the laundry rather than belonging to an inpoverished prostitute who, the day before her murder, was forced to sell her shoes.

Could be a case of someone trying to flog yet another book purporting to reveal the identity of Jack but maybe it's all true and I'm just being a miserable old cynic

I think so too, Dame.  I've read a few books on the subject and every one of them throws up a different suspect that the author tries to convince the reader is the real JtR.

Many years ago Alan Coren wrote a book of humourous observations,  called it 'Golfing for Cats' and put a picture of a swastika on the cover.  Coren had a theory that for a non-fiction book to sell well it should be about cats, golf or the Third Reich (probaby would have to have mentioned the dreaded cupcakes, too, these days).  Old Jack has proven to be a bit of money-spinner down the years, too, and no doubt will continue to be so. Just his 'name' on the cover is guaranteed to flog books

i think the blokes says it wouldnt have belonged to the victim - but the ripper

and

anyway, im not sure i believe what bloke says

he reckons he's 'found' the identity of the ripper because it became a hobby to research & find the truth-not because he wants to write books & make money like others would

at the end of the article it tells you about the cost of his new book

DNA can last for thousands of years - remember that the body of Richard III was recently identified from his DNA. However, a lot depends on the conditions in which it's kept, of course. Ideally you have to keep it dry, cool, away from sunlight and in an airtight container...

The Romanov family were also identified by DNA compared to the queen's hubbie (he's somehow related to them). That also cleared the mystery about Anastasia.

Philip is the oldest living great-great grandchild of Queen Victoria, as well as her oldest living descendant following the death of Count Carl Johan Bernadotte of Wisborg on 5 May 2012. Through his descent from the British royal family, he is in the line of succession to the thrones of the 16 Commonwealth realms.

In July 1993, through mitochondrial DNA analysis of a sample of Prince Philip's blood, British scientists were able to confirm the identity of the remains of several members of Empress Alexandra of Russia's family, several decades after their 1918 massacre by the Bolsheviks. Prince Philip was then one of two living great-grandchildren in the female line of Alexandra's mother Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, the other being his sister Sophie, who died in 2001.
