The iron out and given that there was only 4 shirts to iron(and two of them were too damp to) ironed one, thought stuff it! and put the board away.

Yes! Get the board back at once. Unless the shirts are still dripping with water they are not too wet to be ironed. The heat from the iron will dry them.
