I carried a big telly up 3 flights of stairs for my new flatmate last night, she's only 17 so I did the manly thing of carrying it for her, went to bed OK then in the middle of the night my back went, I'm in agony, made it to work but my boss sent me home.

Not so bad when there is a reason for your back going.Mine went once, went to bed fine woke up in agony, had to call the doc in.No I didn't get up to anything in bed.
I could have just phoned in but would they believe me, at least turning up the MD could see I was really in pain, the other bad part is it happened on a sunny Friady, but honestly I am in opain, my oother boss said get some Codeine (not sure if that's how you spell it).

Anti-inflammatories: ibruprofen or asprin.

that'll teach you to go pretending your a big strong man ey Poolie?
Poor you! Me and my other half are no strangers to various back pain so from the depths of my vast experience I suggest that as well as the painkillers you try gentle warmth on your back. If its muscular pain and not spinal this will help enormously, maybe a hot water bottle (not too hot). Good luck

You can take anti inflammatories like ibruprofen with painkillers, I have a chronic back problem and was advised to do this by my doctor. Always follow the instructions, best to talk to a chemist if you can't get to the doctors. Plus the doctor will only prescribes you the same thing and it's much cheaper to buy them over the counter.

But he's got a good reason today - the poor bloke's in agony so sitting at his PC won't do his back any good! Let him off, just this once!
Sorry I didn't reply back straight away, I've just got back from Boots pharmacy and the bloke behind the counter said I've definetly done something to the muscle and the pain in my leg means I've trapped a nerve, he gave me something called Codipar which has Codeine in it, told me to rest and take themm every 3 hours, apart from that there's not a lot else they can do about it.

Of course Barolo...I like poolie and I`m sorry about his back but we`re talking about years on CH4 where he starts threads maybe asking for advice, you give it and he never comes back..so I gave up..so there!

That's me told, then!!
I know what you mean, I was just supporting a fellow bloke - we're outnumbered here so if we don't back one another, no-one else will!!

There's a sure fire cure for work related back pain. It's called a "weekend".
Osteopath or chiropracter will sort you

Yep! You should also put an ice pack on it every few hours. If you don't have an ice pack, just wrap a packet of frozen veg in a tea-towel.

Well I recommended gentle warmth on the area so between the 2 of us we should confuse the life out of the poor guy

The reason it should be cold is that what he's done is to inflame the muscle. An ice pack will bring down the inflammation and make it less painful. I know this from years of having suffered with a bad back - it was the best advice an osteopath ever gave me.
You use warmth if the muscles / joints are locked.
Sorry I've not been back (Back ged it!), but I had to have a lie down I tried to sleep but I couldn't, as if being in pain was bad enough I made the mistake of watching that terribly awful Jezza Kyle for 5 minutes, flippin eck he's vile!
