PeterCat - I visited the southern island some years ago, Kyushu.  The landscape is absolutely beautiful with its volcanos and rice fields built into the sides of hills.  There is an atmosphere to the place I found tense though - and the geography matched the psychology of the people - as though its all beautiful on the surface but there`s deep sinister things going on under the surface which could erupt at any time.  The people are ultra polite but seemed robotic.  Everyone reads really violent comic books and their tv progs are violent and it seems poles apart from the courteous exterior.  It was all too nice, yet not nice really.

I've not yet been to Kyushu, Jeggo, though I expect to eventually. My boyfriend's family are from there and they still own land there, so we'll have to go and see it when he inherits.

I haven't had that experience you've had of the people, but then it may be different because I'm in a relationship with a Japanese man. I believe there's violence in all cultures, but the Japanese seem to be a bit more up-front about it. Most of the TV shows I've seen there are just bonkers, loads of chat shows interspersed with really crazy ones like a cookery show hosted by a chef, a woman dressed as a princess and a dragon.

The country has a lower crime rate than any Western country as far as I'm aware, and there are very few places I feel safe walking around late at night. I love the way that everyone seems to want to take care of the place. I've seen little litter there, and you get such nice touches as a group of perfectly-manicured trees even in the backstreets.

PeterCat - yep it was all so tidy and everyone looked so neat - even the labourers and roadworkers looked smart and clean, everyone had new cars and you never saw any flytipping, but what was really weird that it was so nice, I never saw any disabled people - now where were they all?  All a bit unreal to me.

There was danger of course, with the volcanoes rumbling and threatening.
