Oh i was wathcing that the other week...ear ache was my theory as well....

I also saw some comedian ripping the pee out of it which was hilarious. He was asking what sort of nutter, on seeing someone holding a hand to their ear years ago, suddenly makes the leap that it must be a time traveller on a mobile phone and thinks thats a reasonable assumption but neglects to ask the question...WHO WAS SHE TALKING TO?

If you watch the whole of the clip it is certainly very odd, definitely someone holding something to their ear and talking, just one of the quirky things the internet is so good for.

I suppose they did have basic walkie talkies in those days. She could have been following Directors instructions.

Interesting, but logically even if time travel is possible, how would the mobile phone signals be transmitted without the mobile phone masts etc we have, or were the signals themselves being capable of time travel?

Walkie talkies weren't around until 1940. Two way radios were around by then, but they would have been far larger than that, at least suitcase sized, I think. the first portable one was invented by an Australian policeman in 1923 for use by the police. But it took up the whole of the back seat in the police car.

But there is an alternative explanation. The film The Circus was premiered in early January 1928. So it's likely that the weather was very cold, hence the heavy coats being worn. Ear muffs were around by then. So maybe the person could have been holding on to one of the muffs if it was windy and the muff might fall off.

I guess the only way we'll find out is if one of us goes back to 1928 and checks it out. But wrap up well and take a mobile with you to let us know what you find out.

Which, off this thread's topic, reminded me of that film with Anthony Newley from 1969 which rates as one of the worst ever made. The list of characters' names contains some slightly unusual names for a film intended for general release.

I like to think she was listening to the 3:45pm(or whatever time in was filmed at) race results and that her horse came in and thats why she's smiling and why her lips are moving she's doing the whole 'yes,come on you old nag,yes,yes,yes' thing.
