Yes I would. I think everyone would praise there bravery perhaps.quote:Originally posted by Blizzie:

why should chirchmen not be able to say 'in my opinion, such and such a political party is offensive to my spiritual convictions'?
Surely they would be failing in their duty as religious shepherds or whatever they see themselves as if they did not

Sounds fine to me.
I'm happy for these guys to make general appeals to community spirit and British values as long as it's just that. I think they ought to be like the queen though, and steer clear of specific political messages.
What bogs me off is when these religious leader types talk of morality as though we all share the same one, and that they seem to mix ethics and morality up.
They tend to start at a level where our ethics agree and then work back up and across to introduce morals. For an atheist like me, their entire moral system is shite even though many of our ethics, or behavioural rules, are the same.
Unless you're a Christian or Muslim or whatever of the same sort as them then their moral reasoning is a load of tosh and it's pointless broadcasting it to everyone as it doesn't apply.

yes I agree because I can see both view points, coz I lived with an athiest for ten years and I respected his views as he did mine.. It was all tosh to him, where as to me it was worth listening to..
This seems to have started with a BNP leaflet suggesting that if Jesus were here then he would vote for the evil ones.
Call me old fashioned but IMHYCO the Archbeako is an expert on what Jesus might or might not have thought, and we have to assume that he is right.

What about when he and the new Cardinal disagree on stuff? Do we have a Celebrity Death Match?

They do disagree on stuff and there have been many celebrity death matchs over the centuries, in various theatres of war and involving various celebrities ofhe time.

Indeed!
The idea that a bloke whose family had to seek asylum in Egypt, to escape Herod's soldiers, and who specifically preached against xenophobia, with his Good Samaritan parable, would support such an outfit is quite ridiculous!
I can't help but think that the continous attacks on the BNP by all the powers that be, does nothing but strengthen their cause.
I for one resent being told who I should or should not vote for.
People can vote for whoever they want. It is just tough cookie if I or anyone else do not like it.

It was one of their leaflets had a picture of Jesus and alluded that he would be a BNP supporter.
The bishops etc have every right to challenge this.

I think that the Archbeako was addressing participating Christians.

So I am not good enough for his advice then?

According to, I think, the Torygraph, that retired couple on the BNP's leaflet was from a stock photo and they are the parents of an Italian doctor. That is, not British at all and nothing to do with the BNP.

If there was an Islamist party set up, which specifically excluded non Muslims and encouraged hatred towards other religions, would you admire any Muslim clerics who preached against them to their congregations, or would you think they were overstepping the mark?
If the party was a legally recognised party I believe they should have the same chances as every other political party!!

They have; advising against them hasn't taken away their rights.

Fortunately for all of us, it is still allowed to have a difference of opinion. Come the BNP revolution, we might lose that.

Yes having different opinions is allowed but they should not be able to use their position to influence the decisions of other ppl!!!
Good on the Bishops.

You seem to have missed the point.
The Nazis published a leaflet in which they stated that Jesus would be likely to vote for Dai Griffiths and his bunch.
You can't expect the Jesus experts not to get involved in such a situation. The church by their very nature have political power and they are exercising it.
Thankfully, we don't yet live in the sort of totalitarian state the BNP would impose if they got in, in which only they would decide who was 'allowed' to voice an opinion.
The Bishops are free human beings, same as the rest of us, and it's no-one's right to tell them what they are 'allowed' to say.
In a free society, if the BNP are 'allowed' to peddle their vile views, we're all equally 'allowed' to criticise them.

The chance to be criticised?
