I was woken up thinking the house was on fire at 5am!!

some people were working on the house opposite all night (renovating) and they have decided to burn all their waste on a bonfire.
As I like to sleep with the BR window open, it all came in the room - and it wasn't normal bonfire smell either, it smells like burning paint and other such crap.
As they started burning stuff yesterday lunchtime and it is still burning now - is that legal?
I can't put my washing out and the windows and our car is covered in black dirt and ash.

Lack of sleep and the continual foul smell are making me cross - it's a lovely day and I want to have my windows open!!

Check with your local councils policy on bonfires etc.Probably under environmental health, if you think they are burning stuff that gives off fumes etc.

Normally there are local by-laws about when you can and can;t (apart from Bonfire night).

Contact your local Environmental health and see what they say...or check you local council website

Thanks for that - it looks like I could complain, but I would feel so embarrassed if the council got here and the fire had gone out - and also I don't really want to upset them if they are going to be new neighbours.
Perhaps I should bite my lip and stop moaning.
(It is very annoying though...)

maybe if they've just moved in knock and have a polite word saying you realise they need to get stuff done but is there any chance of the fire being put out till later as you have washing you need to get done....

THey can do it as much as they like at the weekend, as we are away - taking our son to uni!!

It's his washing I'm doing cos not sure when it will get done again!!

I know your not allowed them over here (Ireland) but I thought it was an EU thing? Anyway take photos of it. I know thats how they get them over here, they fly over in a little plane taking photos of back yard fires.

Thats terrible Moomin, could have been toxic stuff, asbestos even. Oooooooh i'm sorry i'd have got me hose going! Gives a good indication of how considerate a neighbour is going to be

I'm in Glasgow,I'm sure you are not even meant to have garden bonfires now as the council supply garden waste re-cycling bins.

complain, even if the fire is out when they get there there will be evidence of one still i would imagine. and why should you be so considerate to those who seem to show you no consideration whatsoever.
