Hello Tootall,

my son (who is five) has not been in his buggy since he was about 18 months. I've always been keen for him to get plenty of exercise.

He's had a bike with stabilisers on since he was quite young and at Christmas he got a 'big boy' bike and he can now ride that properly.

We have a fair sized play field accross the road from where we live and he loves to play out there. For all he loves his DS, playstation and Nintendo Wii, I think he prefers to play out with his mates.

(he was rubbish on roller skates though)

Hi Towno, thanks for the reply, riding a bike at five with no stableisers is great, sounds like he has a good mix of outside and inside play. I'm aware there are less fields about now as there was when i was a child, One field i used to play on has now got the A1 on now. Also the Middle school I went too had loads of fields, I went back recently for a look and its full of houses which i think is a real shame. Smiler

Hi Honey, yeah there are a lot of idiots out there and you are very vunerable on a bike, Even as a twenty somthing year old when I rode my bike there was areas i had to ride through which i had to be very careful and prefered to ride at some speed through. I do understand any parent being worried about their loved one out and about on their own.

Mind i don't like those little trailers either that you tow behind your bike with your child in on the road, they just seem sooo vunerable too.

Very sorry about the bikes being pinched, its such a horrible feeling. I had mine pinched once when it was locked on a metal gate at a hospital entrance. I had to walk home from my appointment! Smiler

Yes thats very true to Luxor, I fear although the News programs are no longer showing the children on the streets at 10pm and I mean kids, I fear it still goes on. I had thought some people just wanted to not put the effort into their kids Smiler

I got a friend to teach my daughter to ride her bike when she was about 6 years old. My boy didn't properly learn until he was about 8 I think. (hubby taught him)

Both have fab bikes... that are sitting in the shed with cobwebs all over them.

For us the problem is it just isn't safe where I live. Even on the road where our house is, cars and buses zoom along. And the next road is a really busy, dangerous A road.

Hubby used to take them out on bike rides, but since we got the dog that happens less, cos would mean the dog didn't get to come out.

Now that I have addressed the subject matter - here Valentine Big Grin

Hi Triggs! Valentine

I think they should encourage kids riding bikes to school, the young ones could ride next to their mothers walking, great exercise and get kids into riding bikes later on in life instead of driving. Bring back the old school bike sheds I say, and the extra curriculem activitys behind them! Every child should have their own bike post to lock their bikes too. If anyone is next to someone elses people would know they shouldnt be! Smiler

You've got a point there. My friend has three children and apart from their garden there is nowhere for them to play out near where they live as there are houses either side of them. There are fewer green areas for kids to find. And if they are anywhere near a house you'll be sure that the Council will place a 'no ball games' sign up somewhere. It's a shame for my mate, but it does mean she comes to visit us more often Wink

I live in a flat, but as I've said we have a small play park and field right outside and it's quite normal for us to take up residence there during the summer months. Quite often after I finish work we just go over to the play park, Connor has loads of mates there now and they play tag, hide and seek, races, football - anything really. If I'm flush I'll treat them to a bag of chips or an ice cream when the van comes round.

I'd love to think that he'll look back and think he had a happy childhood. I remember playing out for most of my early years. The smallest of things can become big adventures can't they!

I know what others are saying about the streets not being safe but kids have to go out eventually don't they. I think it's a case of releasing them slowly into the wild LOL.

Hi Dirtyprettygirlthing, I really do understand how you feel about the roads and they are getting busier all the time. Also that about only being able to get your dog in the car and not the bikes too. I like to take my sister and her kids with their dog out for walks places myself. Smiler

Yes she is as passionate as me....the stabilisers kept going to one side and she kept freaking out...I told her I wasn't going to let her go, but she was having none of it...and she got off her bike and stormed back into the house...I told her I wasn't wheeling it back because she has to learn it's her responsibility...but she told me she was going for some cake and that was final...oh I didn't mention it was her fifth birthday did I? To me Towno it sounds like you are giving your kids AND their mates great memorys. Sounds great to me you all out their just carrying on the field like it should be. They are all learning about socialising, sharing and getting on together which i think can only do them good in the future too. Yeah there does seem to be a lot of no ball signs about. I used to like playing with any size ball available to me, no smutt meant. Smiler
