Buns to me are all the things you get in the bakery, wether they be cream fingers, baps, scones, german buns....they're all buns!
And you can have a bun as a hair-do.

Where I'm from a bun is called a Softie or a Roll, but we also have Aberdeen Rolls which are not like buns at all and are also known as Rowies. Also a piece is another word for a sandwich or snack.

A bun to me is a bread bun (soft roll) ..........my husband calls all manner of cakes a bun. Even the fanciest, most decorative piece of confection in the patisserie he'll call it a cream bun.

A tea cake does not have currents in it those lancastrians are strange but it seems to be same down south. The amount of times I have asked for a Tea cake and ended up with a toasted currant tea cake is insane even here in yorkshire some cafes seem to be confused sometimes.

Years ago in Glasgow "A bun" was a slang expression for a slag.Not used much now. 
A bun of the bakery variety up here is and iced sweet bun or hot cross type bun etc.
