Some people just need less sleep than others and can function on limited sleep for days on end.

From what I've read in the past, no caffeine or chocolate after 8pm (or any food, if you can help it).

Warm bath with muscle relaxant.

Cup of Horlicks or similar.

Do nothing that will over stimulate the brain (in your case - no pornography dear)

sorry

I've suffered from insomnia for years and was given Zopiclone for a period of 4 weeks to help - 5 years later I was still addicted to it and couldn't sleep unless I took it.  It took me 2 years to wean myself off it

I now sleep fitfully whereby I can sometimes sleep 3/4 hours per night or sometimes not at all for days.

I understand that pirate, i am a terrible sleeper, but i have learnt to switch my brain off, sometimes, and just think, that i will think about "this" tomorrow. It is hard, but even if you dont sleep, as such, just try to go to bed and relax. I have my TV on, every night, just low sound, on a boring channel, just to drift off. I think worrying that you arent going to sleep makes it worse, its a vicious circle. I dont know if this helps, probably not!

Zopiclone

I've been on Zopiclone...      they are horrible....  the next day you have the vilest taste in your mouth...   Zopimouth!!!

Prothiedin were better for me...   when I had hardcore insomnia caused by a traumatic event..  (so prescribed for a short term only).

I occaisionally get insomnia now when I am too sleep deprived (caused by hubby snoring)...  cos its only now & again I find Benylin works a treat, and gets me back into a normal routine

Happy Days 5-HTP Supplement - feel good naturally

Naturally lifts mood.

Happy Days 5-HTP can help to gently lift your mood by boosting the levels of serotonin in your brain, helping to ease depression, reduce anxiety and induce normal sleep.

This plant extract is a natural source of 5-hydroxy-tryptophan (5-HTP). 5-HTP is a substance that is made in the body and converted into serotonin, a brain chemical messenger. Low serotonin levels are believed to be the reason for many cases of mild to moderate depression, insomnia and feelings of anxiety, apathy, fear and worthlessness. Supplementing your diet with Happy Days 5-HTP helps to maintain the levels of serotonin in your brain and is used by many people to gently lift mood, reduce anxiety and induce normal sleep.

The 5-HTP in Happy Days is a natural plant extract from the seeds of the West African griffonia simplicifolia tree. It has been used clinically for over thirty years and is not associated with dependency or addiction.

Each tablet provides 100mg of 5-HTP along with other important nutrients to help 5-HTP conversion into serotonin – Vitamin C, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Zinc, Folic Acid and Biotin.

I might try Benylin Ditty

yeah do...   it is better than Nytol...    which has a similar effect as Piriton on me..  just not quite enough to do the trick.

Can you tell I have done the medicine cabinet in the desperate small hours of the morning... when hubbys snoring is really bad!

There was a time when anything with the warning "may cause drowsiness" did not last long in our house!

I sooo should not say this... as it always tempts fate...   but he's been a lot better recently!

I knew a guy that was addicted to Benylyn,Local Chemists refused to sell it to him

I am careful not to..     I won't let myself do it on consecutive nights...    or more than a couple of nights in a week... and then I can go months without needing to.   Cos I do actually love my sleep...   its just my body gets confused when I have had no sleep one night cos of the snoring issue.

Baz...   its the Chesty one...   but not (as Lal points out) the non drowsy.   You have to get it from the pharmacist.

Treatment of Benylin Addiction

Dependence on and an addiction to Benylin can easily occur if the drug is taken too long or in too high of doses. The withdrawal process can be life-threatening if not monitored and therefore, it is important that those with an addiction seek the help they need to stop taking the drug and to learn how to function normally without it.

Detoxification is required to cleanse the body and must be done under the care of a board-certified physician and a board-certified psychiatrist. Many quality treatment centers suggest comfortable detox using withdrawal medications specific to Benylin abuse. A quality center will do a full physical on a person to determine the right medications for comfortable detox.

I take the lowest mg of zopiclone and have done so since the last time I was in hospital. I don't really care wether that makes me addicted, I couldn't sleep without it for years and now I do. If I have a few glasses of wine, I don't bother.
PS. Ditty, I know what you mean about the strange taste the next morning, but I haven't had that for months. I can't take nytol because it plays havoc with my lungs (antihistamine).

One of the worst culprits for insomnia is lack of vitamin D , you could have your doctor test you for that..also I watched a documentary on insomnia..most insomniacs sleep around 3 to 4 hours a night then have a sleep in the day which adds up which stops you sleeping at night, the clinic stopped the people from using their bedrooms for anything else but sleep for 2 to 4 weeks and they were'nt allowed to enter their bedrooms unless to go to bed to sleep plus no sleep through out the day..their insomnia was cured....

Didn't know that.....interesting though cos Docs immediately assume it's stress related and not a possible vitamin deficiency.
You'd think having vitamins would wake you up and give you spark, I've suffered insomnia since a child, since I can ever remember but since having my vitamin D injections, I have one every 2 months, I sleep like a baby and I'd been on sleepomg tablets for years....

Proper dark helps me sleep...I sleep much better in the winter as opposed to the summer when I tend to wake up (and stay awake) when the sun comes up at about 4.30. Even though I practically have blackout curtains the light still wakes me up. Oh and nytol are shit...they don't work at all.
I'm the opposite, I sleep better with light and noise, I sleep with the telly on and when the doctor would'nt give me sleeping tablets I would take Panodol nights....

I didn't know that, Stonks. I put my disturbed sleep pattern down to "the change".
I've just had a quick look into Vitamin D deficiency and it's quite common in people with Crohn's disease (like me) and can cause other symptoms like pain and weakness in the joints - which I also have, but had put down to getting older.
Maybe I should ask the doc to check it out - although some doctors get stroppy if they think you are self-diagnosing.
