If I were to talk about a group of friends arriving at my house I could say:
"They're here" right?
If I were to talk about a load of breadcrumbs on a table I could say:
"There're a lot of breadcrumbs on the table" right?
I freaking out about this, it's making me feel proper stupid.

'There's' for singular and 'there are' for plural.
'There're' looks wrong, imo.

'Breadcrumbs' is plural - therefore it is 'There ARE breadcrumbs....' however if you were talking about a Pile of breadcrumbs it would be 'There IS a pile of breadcrumbs....'
Furthermore if the breadcrumbs were in several small piles then we are back to 'are' - There are (several) piles of breadcrumbs....'
It's all to do with whether the main noun is singular or plural.
Breadcrumbs - plural....therefore ARE
Pile - singular....therefore IS
Piles - plural....therefore ARE
In this Case 'A LOT' is effectively the same as saying 'A PILE' so it should be treated as singular.
Thus There IS A LOT of breadcrumbs.
'There's' for singular and 'there are' for plural.
'There're' looks wrong, imo.
There are times where a contraction of there is/are looks wrong - this is one of them!

I don't think you'd ever use there're - it doesn't really roll off the tongue dies it.
I would always say (and write) there are.

Looks wrong and I've never seen it before. I don't think it even comes up typical speech. You would say "there are" rather than "There're" as it sounds wrong as well as looks wrong.
