I think he certainly shows typical bullying type traits. Horrible, horrible man.
He reminds me of my ex BiL - could be incredibly funny in a very cruel way - often had us all in hysterics but like a lot of 'funny' people he had a really poisonous side - my sister lived with him for 24 miserable years - she lived with it 
Eric reminds me of him quite a bit.
The thing with men like that is that they are experts at eroding someone's self-confidence, making it hard to leave. I hope your sister is happy now.
