I read it was £60. I don't need one, don't want one and will never pay for one.

I'd happily have one if they were free or a nominal amount, say a fiver. It might even come in handy as I don't drive or have a passport but I'm buggered if i'm going to pay any of these silly amounts we constantly see quoted for one!

I also read somewhere that if you were stopped and you didn't have your ID card on you, you would be given a 'producer', that you would have to report to a Police Station, with your card within a specified time period.....I can see all the illegals doing that can you????

What purpose will they serve?? They reckon to 'preserve your own identity'...this Governament have lost most of out details anyway!!!

Jacqui Smith also says "... post offices and pharmacies could play an important role in the success of the ID scheme, allowing people to give their fingerprints and a face scan while "out doing the shopping". Ha! after they've allowed so many Post Offices to go to the wall and close? Yeah right!

im not fussed about the id card. but i am not paying for it.

As with most things in this area, you must follow the money. This is less about ID and more about us hemmoraging our money to expensive consultancies and computer firms. Various MPs may or may not find themselves with a place on the board at a later date.

Well thats me out then...not that I'm in Manchester...
So to get one I'd have to pay for a new birth cirtificate cos I lost mine...about £10...plus a new passport..whats that? £90? so that £100 before you even get to the cost of whatever the ID card costs.

Yeah right...thats going to happen!

well given that they will be scrapped after the next election anyway since torys, liberals and bnp are all against them and labour have zero chance of getting back in even paying £30 for a trial one is a pointless waste of money, and thats before some kind soul accidenly leaves a laptop or memory stick lying around with all your details on it.

the main arguement for them is security but every recent terrorist attack in the mainland britain was carried out by someone who would be legaly entitled to carry one of these id cards so it would have offered no security whatsoever, i could see them being used as an age check for shops or pubs / clubs but without connecting every licences or off liscenced premises to the system it could only ever be a visual check and you only have to look at america to see how easy it is for students to get fake id's to be able to buy beer.

in these time where the economy is screwed do we realy need to be spending this kind of money as a country on something that has no useful purpose whatsoever?

It's the National Identity Register that people ought to be worried about, not the idea of a piece of plastic. Be worried, be very worried.

I am reaslly angry about this. I am so against it. I don't trust this government with my information. They can't keep the information they have got safe.

And as said, it serves no purpose. It was pushed using terrorism as a reason but as already said, it won't stop anything and the people who they are aiming at one have one anyway or won't care if they do.

I am Mancunian and I certainly won't be getting one, can't see many people actually. Scandalous IMO!

The current government are pretty determined about this. At some point, it will become mandatory. They have law in place already to deal with people who refuse. They'll fine you, about £2K I think, for each refusal to register your biometrics. Or imprison you, if you have no money. They'll probably take the data when you're imprisoned anyway, like your DNA now.

They intend to make it difficult not to have one. They want banks and shops to ask for it at each transaction so that it will be difficult to live without one.

Once it's all in place, its reach will extend so that when you spend money over a certain amount a record will be made centrally. The state will know almost everything about you through your lifestyle. Then, when some faceless paperpusher cocks up your records or someone clones your identity, all hell will break loose. With what do you prove your identity if it's all central, including biometrics, and someone has damaged it?

I should have said until they have me over a barrel I won't be giving anything. I won't be volunteering for the scheme. Being held to ransom by your government in a democracy. It make me so angry.

I still maintain that it is more to do with Consultancies and card manufacturers though.
