I know what you're going through...i had the bastards after me for a year , my nerves were in tatters Mad

Just wanted to reiterate what everyone else has been saying...the CAB were fantastic and they eventually arranged for the whole debt to be wiped out....not saying this will definitely happen for you, but they are excellent in dealing with such things, so get onto them NOW!

You never know Wink

i've been through it with VAT bailiffs
you let them in - they can do an inventory, etc. but they do advise you and make it quite clear of the next stages of recovery. they listed 3x items that were the equivalent to my vat estimate (in your case actual debt), gave me a deadline to pay or they would take goods - then i signed a form.

i thought you had gone to CAB the last time, time to get down there kelly good luck!

The baliffs are only supposed to make a note of any items that are yours, they are not supposed to ASSUME that all items that are in your place of dwelling actually belong to you and they are then supposed to get your signature on their list that you agree that all listed items ARE yours.
If they take anything out of your house from an un-agreed list then they are leaving themselves open to claims of theft as at this moment they have no means of knowing whether these things belong to you or other people.
Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing
EFFT... Yep a bailiff is not normally able to seize goods that are owned by someone else. However, what they do in practice is attempt to seize (and by that I don't just mean literally) goods of any value in the house they visit and the it is up to the individual (who they allegedly belong to) to prove ownership... goods that they can reasonably assume to belong to you.

It doesn't have to be signed.. although it has to be the first time I've heard of a bailiff not getting the person to sign before they scamper off. They can do it though just by marking the item, pointing to it and informing you verbally.

The regulations, to confuse matters further, also depend on the debt in question.
