I have been known to swear on my mothers life....but it is meaingless seeing as she's dead

very very rarely have I done it... sworn on my kids life, and I would never do it and not be telling the truth!

its not something we do generally ....  and to do it and be lying!!    that would just be really really bad!

I've never heard of "swear down"

"swear to god" is a meaningless one...  said without thought.    Its a bit meaningless if I said it...  as any type of god that I think could exist would not be taking any interest in my insincerities!

I'm with Kaytee, I have never sworn on anybody's life and never would. Either someone saying doesn't think that they really are swearing on someone's life in which case do they mean what they are saying, else they do think that they are swearing on someone's life but are prepared to put that person's life at risk.

I would never swear on anyone's life, it just seems wrong somehow.

Agreed! On a few occasions people have said to me 'Swear on your Mums life' or 'Swear on Aila's life' and I have always said no so they assume I am lying

Been used extensively throughout all series of Big Brother.  Most recently by Sree, who swore on the life of his Mother, his Father and his God.

I won't even let my hubby swear on the dog's life. It's just not on.

We don't ever acknowledge the mortality of the dog... its a no no subject.   Mr Ditty & I are happily pretending he is immortal!

When I was a child me and my siblings would use "swear on mums life" as the ultimate test to find out the truth. None of use would ever dare say it unless we were telling the truth.

It was very annoying! You couldn't get away with anything!

I've never sworn on someones life other than my own but I have sworn down.
