Any ideas/suggestions?I am coughing bad tasting phlegm after smoking for around XXXX years. It has become a bad habit which i need to kick for health reasons but habits are hard to kick.

See your doc, they can prolly put you on a programme that will help
all the help in the world wont help ya
its up to you
its all about breaking habits
I stopped using inhalators I registered with Lloyds the Chemist and got them free.
all i did was to remove myself from the situations where i craved a cig, like after a meal, coffee break, i'd make myself get up and do some thing else, after a while it ddin't take long to forget i was meant to have a fag.
one day at a time, don't stop trying just because you trip up on one day.
i'd smoked for a few years and heavily, and honestly giving up was'nt as hard as i thought it would be.

failing that , the patches work really well... stick them over your eyes, so you can't find your fags.

I once had to abstain from smoking for 36hrs so bought some patches.
Ended up wearing 3 simutaneously and still had a ciggy. But then again, I didn't want to give up.
You might find those fake cigs helpful as they mimic the action of smoking without the crud that goes with it. Good luck.

Why didn't I think of that?..!
I'd love to give up smoking but tbh I know I haven't yet reached the stage where I really WANT to.
ive tried but havent done it yet, doctors always offer to help me stop smoking.
remember this, nicotine is addictive but it stays in your system for a max of 48 hours, so once you get past that, it's just the habit you need to deal with.
Tori, I'm thinking about this too. I read this article from the Guardian and thought it might address some of my problems about habit over addiction. Make sure you read the comments, there are loads of useful site links. Good luck!
I've been on nicotine replacement chewing gum for 22 years ...............it's no cheaper but somehow it makes me feel better not being a smoker (cos it is really smelly and IMO quite offensive) in reality though - I simply swapped one addiction for another!
Seriously - the gum is a good way to quit ..............after 6 months wqean yourself off. Good Luck

That really is the only way.
If you really don't want to quit - you're fighting a losing battle. The real want to quit is the only way you'll crack it IMO.

Catch 22 Pirate....I enjoy smoking, have smoked for decades but having a thing for smells I loathe the smell of it,if I were to smell it in my house my clothes my hair I'd go mad.

I know Sooz,I do ,smoke quite heavily tbh but I take care of my grandkids 5 days a week and smoking is banned everywhere in this house when they are here. Before they arrive I am out on the deck hail rain or snow grabbing a smoke, when they go home I collapse with a coffee and a smoke ,when they not here I'd need a chimney on my head.

Lee .....................as you're a smoker you wont be able to smell it. Believe me (and I'm not being mean) - if you smoke - your clothes will smell of smoke, your hair will smell of smoke and if you smoke anywhere in your house it will smell of smoke. I'm not saying that to be unkind but if you are a smoker you won't smell it. No ammount of air freshener, oils, candles will take away the smell. My mum smokes in her house (I make her stand at the back door here) cruel I know but in spite of all the smelly parephenalia going on at her housev - it smells like a coal mine (the best way of describing it).
There reaLLY IS NO WAY OF RIDDING YOUR HOUSE OF SMOKE FUMES OTHER THAN MAKING IT A SMOKE FREE ZONE...................sorry didn't mean for caps and .............it is JMHO of course.

Sooz believe me I can smell it,my husband would confirm that.I do have lots of products but in the 2 rooms anyone would smoke I have tall tower HEPA air purifier's and one in the living room for good measure. They weren't very cheap in excess of ÂĢ130 each but they are fab,I wouldn't be without them not just for smoking odour but for air quality in general.
I have tried the nicotine patches to no avail. and the gum. --- yuk... seems like it is all down to me cutting down bit by bit and hoping to quit at the end. I need to do this as i am coughing up phlegm in my throat and swallowing it which tastes really bad. I roll ciggies BTW.

Tori never swallow the mucus, never. As nasty as it sounds put it in a tissue,it's not pleasant but it's important not to swallow that gunk.

Thanks for that info Lee. It is really nasty tasting and think that this is why i am off my food lately. My appetite has suffered since my cough has got worse but don't want to see the doc fearing the worst. No one wants to hear what they say and i would rather carry on as i am. I know it is wrong but having to go into hospital for tests/ etc; is a no-no with me so i suppose it is down to me to help myself.

Tori please make an appointment with your doctor, the bad taste could indicate an infection,if it's affecting your appetite it is important you see your GP.They'll sound your chest and lungs, you may need some anti biotics ,please please get an appointment asap.
I and another fm Lainy M gave up at about the same time 4+ years ago. I did it cold turkey after 30 years of smoking, not sure about Lainy.
I know that you can get help from your doctors and the local health authorities have stop smoking surgeries and meetings so have a look round.
As Lee said you must see your doctor Tori. They will be supportive about you doing something positive for your health. At least see the nurse at your practice who will have loads of info
Good Luck
I started smoking at the age of 11. On my 40th birthday I woke up and said no more. I binned my cigs and lighters and almost 9 years later i am still smoke free. Before then I had tried most methods but the only method that worked for me was just to stop. Find a way that works for you and stick with it. It will be worth it in the end.
I've never smoked in my life
I'm the worst smoking non smoker going..I hate it..noone is allowed to smoke inside my house, I smoke outside no matter what the weather..I've been on the patches and gum and still failed but the patches were the best, I lasted 3 days....I have a friend who was hynotised and he lasted a year off them then started again....the only person I know who gave up fully and never went back is my dad and he used nothing but will power....

Smoking is banned from the car Stonks,it is too confined to risk reeking of ciggies....Mr C went off the cigs years ago, around 5 yrs it lasted ,when we were getting a lot of work done to the house he started again, blamed the stress of the work.
