If we had sweatshops and cheap labour here in the UK then we wouldn't have to buy from the sweatshops in China.

Top form! They got on their bikes, hid themselves and their bikes under a lorry over the channel, and got a job in a sweatshop here. *still with Norman's hat on*
Bea looks like Olive from Popeye, she was right about sounding bitchy about Hira, if it wasnt for Mrcus or Siavash, Bea would not be there now.
I love it that Bea's still in the house and can inspire a 9 page thread just for pointing out the obvious.
Primark is shit, she's right.

All highstreet stores source cheap labour... Only difference is that Primark's prices are low....

Primark is cheep and cheerful. Some stuff is great, some isnt. The point is she was being an unsufferable SNOB. Dissing Hira, who wouldnt say Boo to a goose. Shes Vile. Hira wears lovely clothes that are nothing like Primark. Does she realise what she sounds like. That, Oh so childish wineing about the Frosties. What a spoilt brat she is. No wonder she cant hold down a job. Pity the poor guy who gets her.

In defence of some high street stores.... most of them will audit the factories where their goods are being made (even if being bought from a UK supplier) Most audits now include a review of the pay and conditions of the employees which has resulted in lots of factories actually having to increase the pay and better the conditions of the people working there. It's still pretty crap, but not often not as crap as it would be if they weren't producing for high street names.

Bea is hideous.
I watched a documentary last year, the same suppliers serving Primark also supplied to established high street stores.... Gap was named, there were other big highstreet stores too but their names weren't mentioned(I wonder why)...quote:Originally posted by ~~KaffyBaffy~~:quote:Originally posted by pretty~cocoa~eyes:

I think its highstreet brands trying to destroy Primark because they are jealous of how much profit they are making....Still doesnt make it better but they are all doing it....

Things may have changed in recent years though Cocoa - it's changing all the time, albeit slowly. Licensors too, like Disney for example have very strict humanitarian policies and simply won't deal with factories if they don't come up to scratch. They are very thorough, they go through wages records and interview individual employees too. I'm not saying it's great, but it is a start. I know some factories who do have two sites - one for regular production and one for production for guys who audit. Small steps - and as Mo pointed out, what is there for the employees if those factories didn't have any contracts at all? Not saying it's right - just that you're battling years of this mentality and won't change overnight.

Probably - it's a slow tide of change... I'm under no illusion that all these big corporations have finally found a heart, they're reacting slowly to public awareness. China is also trying to get it's act in gear regarding quality issues now (since the baby milk and poison toys issues!) One day...!

Victoria Beckham is a walking advertisement for a fashion designer. She came to my Graduate Fashion Week for exactly that reason, she gets the press and people talking about the event. Designers use celebs to advertise their clothing, and the celebs get free outfits for it.
I'm a trained fashion designer PCE and am starting my own company soon. It's a very difficult industry to be in.
Primark is great but you have to choose sometimes when to go. The one near me is always heaving on certain days and they also don't have much in. If you go on a Tuesday, it's not too bad. Great for getting people xmas pressies

Goodluck with the everything and make sure you keep your Ideas and designs to yourself... I heard about how people steal peoples ideas...
A little question, how do you get design ideas? do you read fashion magazines and watch FTV to get them or do they just pop up in your mind?
Noticed thatquote:Originally posted by Bojangles:quote:Originally posted by Cariad:

She didn't eat most of her lunch! She just really sat there looking pretty and had bodyguards outside her dressing room. It was strange!
Thanks PCE. It's difficult though to not get ripped off because if you show on catwalks or at trade shows then that's where a lot of the high street brands send their designers to get the trends and then they do their own versions. Primark have been to court for it I'm sure and other shops too.
My ideas sometimes come from mags, tv, historical clothing etc, but I'm a bit of a strange one and get inspired by buildings, railings, nature and decay. It can come from anywhere really. I designed a whole collection based on mushrooms once!

There have been a number of court cases against Primark from various brands/designers but most settle out of court. Here is just one example of the copying that goes on...

but show that picture after a week, or a year,i bet they dont look similar then, the primark one will have fallen apart, the Gucci one will still look like in the photo.

Exactly. Disposable fashion at it's worst imo.
I have always gone for quality rather than quantity. I have items in my wardrobe that have lasted 20 years, good job fashions goes round in circles
Went to Primark once, put a few things in a basket, and the noise and bussle was so overwhelming I just dumped the basket and ran out. I take my hat off to anyone that can actually be in that place for more than 10 mins.

absolutely right, its an argument i've had many times, it usualy starts with "you paid how much?", well no, thats not quite right, it usualy starts "those shoes look nice, how much were they?" then when you reply they are ready to call the men in white coats.
but honestly which is better value? a ÂĢ400-ÂĢ500 pair of shoes that will last 10 years+ or a ÂĢ90 pair of nikes that will be dropping apart in 6 months.
never been into a primark but i'll thank sexy_kelly for explaining what it was to me a few weeks ago in the oasis.

But show those in a year and they wont be in fashion anyway. Which is why someone earlier in the thread said that was why they liked Primark....fashion at affordable prices
I'm not a huge fan of Primark for its fashion but more for it's comfort. PJs, Socks, undies and vest tops are fine but I wouldn't wear a dress from Primark to a nightlub. Its not really snobbery (trust me I'm far from a snob!) but more the fact that there will be 20 other girls wearing the same thing. Great for holiday wear too though, loads of shorts/vest/dresses are great prices that you'er only planning on wearing once or twice anyway.
I've never been in a Primark
That's good to know hun... I wish you all the best....quote:Originally posted by faerykelstar:quote:Originally posted by pretty~cocoa~eyes:quote:Originally posted by faerykelstar:quote:Originally posted by pretty~cocoa~eyes:
