COVID is the virus that just keeps giving

I'm now a hypochondriac - every sniff or slight sore throat, chest ache  - anything ....

It's the virus

Posted a letter today - mask ON in the car - oh yes!

Apart from a quick dash to a local supermarket I have not gone anywhere and have hardly even stepped outside the house - though that's partly due to the frequently inclement weather!

You are both braver than me I wish I could beat the fear and at least pop into the local shop .....but I’m just too scared ....like Renton says , it’s the virus that keeps giving !

Baz

I've not really locked down because I have been taking daily exercise all the way through the Pandemic....the supermarket I  frequent has been excellent in following the rules,as have the customers  and I've had to go to the hospital twice, was apprehensive the first time but they have it nailed down too

in general, apart from teenagers who seem to have gone feral people have all been social distancing , ....so apart from eating out etc my life hasn't changed much. I'm lucky to live in a low infection area so  I'm not afraid to go out and about while taking all necessary precautions, public transport is a big no no though

Kaytee

I needed to post something recorded delivery

Had no other choice but to go to the Post Office

Asked if they would come to the car park and take it in for me - frank it and give me receipt and change

They said yes!! - I stood in car park only - for about 3mins - then back in the car

Was terrifying to see all those people around Sainsbury's with masks on - should have been reassuring but it wasn't - looked like a war zone

Saint

Shocked to hear BoJo say it is every parents moral responsibility to get their kids back to school

How dare he pressure people by suggesting they are not fit parents if they fail to obey!!

Saint

I couldn’t agree more .....parents shouldn’t be forced to send their children back if they don’t feel it is right for them .....especially after reading today that scientists think that once people are forced indoors this winter there maybe be another 85,000 deaths

I have no particular wish to go where there are people (except my own relatives) . I can only imagine what it must be like for parents 'having' to send their children to school!

It's all very well saying 'send your children to school as the evidence shows that they are less harmed by the virus and don't appear to transmit the virus as readily as adults', but it's not just about how children are (or aren't) affected, but also how their interaction with the rest of us might affect other risks.

Exactly EFFT There also seems to be evidence emerging to show that the virus could live for several weeks in their noses .

Not really surprising Baz. Nice warn moist mucus tissue!

And that could go for all of us!

Just forget 2020 - children will not suffer despite the 'impartial' BBC rolling out tons of kids saying they want to go back cos they miss their friends

Smacks of John Gummer feeding his child a burger during the CJD outbreak

I don’t know how , if us mere mortals can see it , the powers that be ...and even the scientists .....can’t ! They are still saying that people need to observe social distancing ......and we know how well that’s being observed by huge swathes of the population.....  so how can it be right to throw kids back into classrooms ....not to mention getting on school buses etc

I remember a scientist on the news being asked where he would avoid and he said

"Any enclosed space where people gather"

QED

I saw that too, but wasn't that BEFORE lockdown? Obviously, now that we've had 3 months of full lockdown that was SO WELL observed from all corners ( ) the situation is quite different!

Teenagers haven't been following the rules anyway. I'd rather they were all in school than roaming everywhere with no attention paid to the rules most of us are following

How are children to be collected from school?  At my granddaughters school all parents stand in the playground but there isn’t enough room to social distance, it is a narrow road with no car park ( the staff have to park on the road) it will be a nightmare next Thursday

Moonie

I got tested yesterday

It's been almost 2 weeks since I ventured out for the first time in five months to get a haircut

And the very first time i've had any close contact with anyone except my Mum.

Since then i've been scaring myself by reading all the COVID info I could find.

This virus is a lot more variable than i thought . . .

The typical incubation period from infection to exhibiting symptoms is 5 days

By 11.5 days 97% of infected people will display symptoms

The remainder will display no symptoms but are still infectious

From the time you display symptoms you should isolate for 14 days - this is the typical duration for the virus to remain in your body ... unless you continue to display symptoms.

And those symptoms can vary  - a lot

Typically:

Loss/change in smell/taste

High temp

A new persistent cough   >>>>>   ME

But there are a whole range of other symptoms that can indicate you may have the virus as it affects people differently.

Fever or chills

Sore throat  >>>>   ME

Runny nose             ME (occasionally)

Headaches  >>>     ME (occasionally)

Difficulty breathing

Chest pains/heaviness  ME (occasionally)

Aches and pains throughout your body

I was starting to wonder if it was all in my head ... except the sore throat  - that was definitely there and I was continually trying to stifle the desire to have a good cough.

Add to that my Mum developed a new cough so i panicked and booked a test!!!

The web site was shockingly straight forward and basically took my word for it that i was telling the truth and not a crazy hypochondriac (which I was by this stage)

"We are experiencing high demand etc etc . . . .  please use the site wisely (or somethnig - i skimmed that bit)

Except that they had every 30min slot available on Sunday 30th 8am - noon - I took 11am

Allow 30 mins for your test

Turned up early to a sight straight out of a Hollywood movie set - quite surreal and bizarre - except for the guy sitting on a plastic chair wearing a hi-viz jacket and yawning widely. He lazily pointed me "over there"

Seven tented bays via a one way system and many portacabins staffed by lots of young people pointing me this way and that.

After checking i'm me and not a loon was told, "Bay seven" - Why? All the bays were empty - the whole site was empty.

Just me and them and COVID19

"Do you want to test yourself or we can test you?" "Erm ... well what's the best thing to do?"

"We can do it more accurately" - well why give me the choice ? So they did it.

Cotton bud right to the tonsils and then the SAME bud up me snout (quite far) for 15 seconds.

Done!! Goodbye - results in 24hrs - could be 48 but call that number if it's 72

Results came back by 8.30am this morning (Monday) = NEGATIVE

I have stopped googling symptoms, I became panicky with every cough, sneeze, runny nose, aches, fatigue, headache, nausea and having to eat something to check if I have lost sense of taste .........(okay so the last one wasn’t strictly necessary!)

Holidaymakers will face "chaos and hardship" if coronavirus quarantine measures are reintroduced for those arriving to the UK from Portugal, a travel industry leader has warned.

Portugal has recorded 21.1 virus cases per 100,000 people in the past week.

The UK considers imposing 14 days of isolation on travellers when a country's infection rate exceeds 20 cases per 100,000, over seven days.

The boss of British Airways' parent firm said the numbers were "arbitrary".

It was only on 22 August that Portugal was added to the list of countries that are exempt from UK rules requiring travellers to self-isolate for two weeks, prompting a rise in searches for flights by British holidaymakers.

Writing in the Times, IAG chief executive Willie Walsh said the "ever-changing" quarantine requirements meant "the UK has officially hung up the 'closed' sign".

"Another U-turn by the government, adding Portugal to the quarantine list, will cause further chaos and hardship for travellers," he said.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So effectively he's saying that our infection policy should be based on NOT upsetting the holiday maker and travel industry and that the nation;s health can come a poor second to that!

I mean, what's another few hundred/thousand deaths against cousin Joe and family having an enjoyable un-interrupted FOREIGN holiday?

Awwww Renton I am glad you got a negative test , and I totally understand your fear . I had a friend pop round at the weekend ....and even though we socially distanced ...and sat in the back garden , I was still worried.  But then it dawned on me that for the first 4 weeks after I came out of hospital .....at the height of the pandemic .....I had people coming in to look after me at least once a day ! And while caution is a good thing ....I’m starting to think the fear of the darn disease is almost as crippling

'Jumped the gun'

Speaking on the BBC's Today programme, Mr Shapps said: "On Wednesday the Scots - without using the joint bio-security centre data for this particular decision - decided that people from Greece would be excluded, and jumped the gun on that.

"It is their right to do it but it doesn't make the overall message any clearer."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If it is Scotland's (or any other country's) RIGHT to do something, how can they have 'jumped the gun'?

And how is it not clear?

All the fuss about secondary schools being unable to social distance and the wearing of masks or not.....today the lower end of the age range having been released in a graduated way.......left the school gates behind and banded together in large crowds with not a mask in sight.....was always going to happen

3 Schools in Glasgow and 1 in Paisley now showing Covid-19 infections. We're all going downhill because people no longer have any measure of self-control! People talk disparagingly of 'The Nanny State', but it's becoming more and more obvious that that is what is required because, left to our own devices, the population (in general) have no understanding or ability to behave properly!
