I got a bit of a shock listening to Johnson on Thursday. When he said that the 5 criteria were being met and there was a continuing fall in the number of new cases, I was prepared to take it at face value. But then it turned out that the 'R' value in some parts of the country was '1': not close to '1', but actually at '1'.
Surely there's a contradiction there? It means that in some areas, the slightest change will cause a fresh increase, and the "Track and Trace" procedures to cope with that sort of localized increase aren't properly in place yet.
It all feels very risky, and I got the growing impression today that the government knows it. They seemed to be preparing the ground regarding who to blame if it all goes wrong: the scientists for their "guidance", and the public for not following the rules properly...
