but I really dislike the consumer society. Sometimes I wish I could flick a switch and we'd be back in bartering times. I know it's all a naive dream but I give you the crap that's going on now and I rest my case.

yeah I hate it too. .but that's probably cos I can't take part in it and haven't been able to for years.. oh for a lottery win to buy some totally useless gadgets to play with til I get bored of them.. just for once... 
Although I dislike the consumer led society we seem to be in these days, I do enjoy the trappings of modern living especially technology, but (and it is a big but) I always save up from my wages for anything I buy. I was taught by my parents to save for things and I still do it. I did it for my recent iPad Air purchase and also for my big TV.
