My trick is because I've worked in sales all my life when I apply for a job I don't just apply and hope for the best, I always ring the company up and ask to speak with the person who is dealing with the vacancy and ask some obscure question like when are the final dates for applying. The reason for this is so they can hear you on the phone and hear your telephone manner, very important, it also gives you that edge because they remember speaking to you, I also email my references along with my CV, it saves them time checking on you, it works for me.
