last night on a bit of blackice, right into the hedge, windscreen cracked in three places, bumper, wing and light need renewing. All the experts are shouting 'right off', but I want to keep the car and don't look at it as a commodity.

Blimmin eck that was some crash I don't know if you get DLA but if you do, have you looked into a mobility allowance for a car? If the insurers are saying it's a write off then it sounds like it's beyond repair tbh. Damn that's all you need just before Christmas, hope you're ok x
cologne
Glad you are ok though

Thanks karma and Rexi. It's just the mechanics sucking through their teeth, but I hadn't thought of contacting DLA, I thought they only pay for Tax. I just got this car a couple of months ago and it's the best one I ever had, so I'd like to keep it if at all possible. First crash in 22 years.
Hope you're okay Cologne.
My mum had her car leased through Motability:

Not sure if that's of any help to you.

I am, I hit my head on the steering wheel and am sporting a black eye, but that's it.
A black eye? you dont need to get checked out do you?
Hope you feel better soon.

Ouch hope that black eye fades away
If you get higher rate DLA you get a mobility allowance that you can use to rent or purchase a car. Plus you get tax relief for 6 months and a blue badge. It's worth looking into

I will thank you. Everybody thanks.
Jeezo Cologne, that's not so good. I hope you aren 't too shaken up
Glad you're ok Cologne
cologne, that must have been scary!
Hope you can get some help with the car.

cologne hope you are okay it must have shaken you up perhaps it would be a good idea to get your eye checked it has taken an awful blow,if you are on DLA and get the higher rate of mobility you can get a car as Karma said but I am sure you forgo the monies you receive, if you can afford to do without the money it is brilliant as you will always have a car and the car tax paid which is a big weight off your shoulders,if you dont have a car or dont drive you can also get the car tax for a friend/family who take you were you need to go,I give my car tax to my daughter as she does all my shopping and takes me wherever I want to go,it is worth thinking about, take care
Cologne, what rotten luck. Thank goodness you weren't seriously hurt.
Things like this can be quite traumatic.
I hope that somehow you manage to keep the car.
The main thing is that you are alright - even with the black eye!

Thanks everyone for concern and advice. I'm alright really, it just kind of sank in today when I realised the car was more damaged than I thought. I'm hellbend on getting it sorted because my best friend bent over backwards to get it down to me from Scotland and it's very reliable and easy to drive. I do get the higher mobility DLA Karma, so I'll give them a call on Moday, although, this was down to me not controlling the car, but I'm only 3rd party, etc, so I'll have to do something to keep mobile.
Awww hope your OK Col....a tip always shakes you up... a right off does'nt always mean the car can't be fixed it sometimes means it will cost more to be fixed than its value..so if the insurance company say your make and model is worth ÂĢ1,000 but the repair is ÂĢ1,500 thats classed as a write off....

Good job you're ok Cologne, cars can be fixed, sometimes people can't

Thanks stonksy. That's my point really, they say the car isn't worth it in monetary value, but it's worth it to me.

Glad you're not too badly hurt Cologne, but still it leaves you shaken.
Hope you can get your car sorted and soon be mobile again. I would think that with your illness you would qualify for all the stuff other fms have mentioned.
Be safe

Thanks veggie, I don't know about the entitlements. I fought for the basics for 4 years, I cannot be bothered to wade through all the stuff; I realise that's a bit of a cop out, but I really don't think I need anymore than I get now. I can afford to get the car fixed (paying it off over 3 months) I expect when I get worse eventually, I will have to take up all the help I can get, but I'm not quite there yet. Reference:

Sorry to read that cologne
Hope you're able to keep the car.
Maybe it can be repaired for less than first estimates.

Thank you VD and Stonksy, I will keep the car and get it fixed, I don't care how much it's going to cost. My Mechanic will let me pay it off and I will have a bill, so fair play all round.
I will if it gives me grief. I promise.
Oh Cologne I hope you are ok you must have had an awful fright, take care
Cologne, hope you are ok, that's a nasty thing to have happen to you.
You can get the car back and have it repaired yourself, Mr Pink had some one go into the back of him in March, he was stationary, ignition off the works and a guy in a works van hit him and moved him about 50 feet down the road. We were given two quotes from the insurance, one if we had the car effectively written off and they disposed of it or one if we kept the car and some money on top. Mr Pink chose to keep the car and have the money as his friend wanted to buy the car (a 54 reg Astra estate) and repair the damage ( back quarter panel, back bumper, lights and boot lid), He repaired the car and sent the log book off to DVLA who classed the car as Category C.
Check your insurance policy as even third party fire and theft policies very often will provide a courtesy car while your car is being assessed, it's worth checking if you are covered
This explains what Category C means
C - Repairable salvage. Generally applies to older vehicles. Can be sold for repair but must now have VIC inspection.
Recorded at DVLA & HPI.
Good luck and hope you feel ok soon.

I'm sorry to hear about your accident. Someone drove into the back of my car a few week ago, and the garage told me it was likely to be a write-off when they took it away, but when they inspected it more thoroughly, they were able to fix it. So don't lose hope about your car , maybe the damage won't be quite as expensive once they've had a chance to look at it more closely.
