Issy, in Germany police have been armed for as long as I can remember and, although I don't agree with it, it doesn't look surreal to me.

I suppose so Cologne and the times call for the measures but I was standing right up close to them and as naive as this may sound I have never seen a real gun before,

It was more scary in Nigeria where you don't really know if they are legitimate police who stop you with great big machine guns, staring at you through the window and you try desperately not to look at them. Mind you, I was one of those mad people that loved the adventure and we were lucky and never encountered bandits.

Round about 1972 I found myself on a bus in Paris. Some fillete had complained about a drunk who had tried to sexually assault her, although i didn't know that at the time. A policeman, an agent, or a gendarme, who cares, alighted and tried to remove the very refreshed local from the bus. The guy wouldn't move and the cop drew his gun and started hitting the bloke with it. Reader! I nearly shat! Thirty years later I was in a Thalys a few minutes after Aachen when the Polizei entered my wagen and started hassling a citizen. They obviously knew who they were after. As the lent over the other side of the aisle I could see that they were festooned with all sorts of gear including big guns. I quickly yet deftly made my way to the toilet where I had what I now know to be my first and only panic attack.
