Yes. That's how I spotted it. The story was trending on the BBC webpage last week. Every so often an old story pops up unexpectedly, my theory is a bunch of people are trying to get old stories into the BBC's top 10 most viewed.

Watching the people on Jeremy Kyle I often thought that 

In "The Time Machine" HG Wells speculated that the technical and downtrodden working class, forced underground, would diverge into a separate branch of humanity and end up preying on their former lazy, listless masters and end up farming them as if cattle.  This seems speculation along the same lines.
