Not for me Prom, I find their music lacking subtlety.

Completely fair enough. There are so many bands that have been really popular over the years and I just don't get them at all and I like to think I have pretty broad tastes in music. They boy/girl band phenomenon leaves me stone dead cold for example I hate to think todays youth are aspiring to such idiocy.

I don't understand the concept of over-rated bands. You either like them or you don't.

I see an overrated band as a band who have many fans and are highly regarded that you don't like.  That's why I've not mentioned Westlife.  I think Westlife are crap but they're hardly held in high esteem by critics and musicians and the majority of music buyers.  Westlife are hardly likely to name checked in "Rolling Stone" or the "NME" etc.  Most people would tend to agree that they're crap, so they can't be regarded over rated.

Prom, I can't quote. I don't dislike the Beatles, ABBA or U2, I just think they are way over rated.

Fair enough that's exactly what this thread is about. I don't think they are even though I absolutely despise U2 for reasons I won't go into here they changed the face of rock music single-handedly and wrote some incredible songs. I am always amazed by anyone who doesn't think The Beatles were the most important band of all time but I don't argue with them because there's no point. Music is so subjective. Abba, though I love them I can see why loads of people would really hate them

Sex Pistols, only one album really that's any good before they disintegrated.  That album set a style and attitude that has been an inspiration to many bands for decades now.  If you don't get it, they must seem over rated.  I much preferred the Clash, now that was a band that it's almost impossible to over rate! In my humble opinion - that is!

If a band has become a massive success and have a huge following - who is to say that they are overrated? If the fan base is huge it's pretty obvious that lots of people like them ...................ergo - in the eyes of the fans they're certainly not overrated.

I think it is only music snobs who use the term overrated .....................it simply means - lots of people like them but I don't!

Music is subjective......................what is sneered at - at a certyaIN MOMENT IN TIME may well be highly rated years later ...................I think Abba and Queen are prime examples.

ergo - in the eyes of the fans they're certainly not overrated.

A lot of people bought Agadoo and the Grandpa Christmas song does that justify the clowns who erroneously forced such pap on the world or does it simply say that most of the record buying public are actually quite stupid just as most of the people who buy the ever popular Sun newspaper should be administered mercy lobotomies?

To be fair to John Lydon, saying you'll never sell out when you're 20 should be taken with a pinch of salt.  For most of his career Lydon has been fairly consistent in his attitudes and the work he's done.

He could have gone for that Billy Idol 80s style American corporate MTV rebel rocker image when he was younger but didn't go in that direction.  He's probably more aware of his mortality now and if doing a butter advert gets him some easy cash then it's no great betrayal of principles.

Because alot of the time its just people being sheep and  for example, in the 60's who did teenagers have to follow who were English but the Beetles, they'd had Elvis who would'nt tour in England so a new group pops up with 5 blokes and some women go mental....
