I wouldn't rate Mondrian at all.

Lol @ Pollock, did he really picture that just like it is in his head and think Ooow thats wonderful i better get it on paper? OR did he just sling some pant at a canvas and sell it to some arty numb nut?

I quite like Mondrian. To say he painted these picture 70/80 years ago I think they have stood the test of time. His designs have been used through the decades on furniture, wall paper, textiles clothes, shoes etc etc.So some people must like him.

I think Mondrian & Pollack are both alright....

if you wanna see some crap art, I could show you some crap (very expensive) art...    tis my job to collect the data on the art sold at the worlds top 32 auction houses..  

Mondrian is not to my taste. I prefer a bit of Pollock, personally.

However, neither of the examples above seem to require any particular talent (in the artistic sense). To me, it is just interesting design, as opposed to 'art'. My sister is very artistic and three of her kids have inherited her talent. I would rather hang their work in my home, than those shown here.

In fact, Mr blizz cooked some up last night (not battered and with rice, not chips), but it was quite a work of art. 

I don't pretend to get 'abstract' either.. and I know a small gallery owner who literally decided that she needed stock, went to the garage and chucked some paint about..... and got over a couple of grand for some of them, amidst all the cooing about 'what the artist was trying to say'     a fool an their money....

that said, I have a print of this in my kitchen - I love it for some reason, and I still stand by the theory if you want something, can afford it and will get pleasure from it, buy it.  Even if it's just splashes of colour.   I like Rothko too.

When I was in London recently I noticed the London Underground had a new design on their map/leaflet. I looked it up on the internet.

You can keep your Mondrian and Pollack, give me a nice Constable or Monet, any day of the week.

At least these artists put a bit of design into it, be it to your taste or not. The worst 'artist' in the whole world has to be Damien Hurst. How the hell can you get famous for chopping an animal in half or dipping it in formaldehyde ? Thats not even your creation in any way shape or form.  Mother Nature owns the copyright!  That makes me angry.

Pollock had a rival - this painting was one of three sold at Bonhams back in 2005 for a total of £12,000.

And I hate the way that fans of this stuff talk like they are in some private club that 'get it' and we just dont, because we are in some way a lesser species.  How about we 'get' that they are all off their heads and that it is a pile of shit that they have been sold!

I love modern art, infact I don't like hardly any well known pieces of art or artists, but it does have to be ART.

I don't like Hurst either...    sooo contrived!   & crap!

Some of that Pollock stuff looks like bollox  those paint thingies you used to do at the funfair.  Know what I mean?  Squirt choice of paint colours, place 'artwork' on a fangly turntable, spin for 30 seconds - and there's your masterpiece

There is a whole genre of art called "Cow Art"...

I love the old Masters. I love going to the National gallery. My favourite painting is the Arnolfini  marriage by Jan Van Eyck. The detail in that is superb.

Today my favourite artist is Jack Vetriano. 

I do like some modern art as well as the old stuff and things in between, as in the same way I love most genres of music but not all of them. Art as well as music is very personel to each person. I do think that there is a lot of emperors new clothes situations in the art world, as has been said. I agree Damien Hurst is a pretentious prat.

I know nothing whatsoever about art but I did study a little bit of pre raphealite as part of a Humanities degree - I love this one. Don't know why - I just do.
