I suppose, though, that if it is a wine with sediment the tapping of the bottle is going to disturb that sediment, and you would then face a long wait until the sediment settles again.

I do think it's rather a handy tip should you be in the company of a gentleman with good shoes but do not have a bottle opener
Most wine bottles have a screw top now. If you want to open a bottle of Newcastle Brown however and don't have an opener, there's always the door lock.
