I watched most of it and had seen the Gallas goal... what do you want them to do about it? Replay the match? Hardly... it will just be swept under the carpet like every other game.

It's the attitude of 'it happens, get over it' that perpetuates the problem of cheating in whatever form within the game.

The more people that ask questions, the more likely something will change for the better.

There was much more than the Hand of Gaul...he tried it again further down the pitch, but was caught that time...Keane was blatantly tripped...there were dives for free kicks and one for a penalty...the French were a disgrace.

If that's the kind of team Fifa and soccer fans want, then they've a bloody nerve harping on about the importance of Fair Play. So what it goes on in the Leagues every week...it's still poor sportsmanship.

I never said you did...but you did say you'd rather see the French, who had to cheat their way into the Finals, than the Irish in the world cup. Doesn't say much about today's supporters. Most supporters I know would rather see teams in the World Cup who deserve to be there...do the french deserve to be there? We'll never know because they cheated.

I made a point the other day thusly....... Whoever loses between France and Ireland may like to ponder that New Zealand have just qualified.
Yoiu may also like to consider Japan, North Korea, South Korea, USA, Australia and so forth. There lies the problem. It won't surprise you that I prefer the European competition everytime.

Bets off - bookies in goal refund

Two bookmaking chains are refunding bets backing Ireland to qualify for the World Cup.
Thierry Henry clearly handled the ball before playing it for William Gallas to score the equaliser which saw France win 2-1 on aggregate.

William Hill and Paddy Power are refunding stake money to customers who backed the Republic to qualify.

William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said it would cost them a "five figure sum" but it was the right thing to do.

"Leaving aside any moral scruples and the fact that no-one knows what would have happened if the goal had been disallowed, William Hill feel that they are being as fair as possible to everyone by returning stake money to those who bet on the Irish going through," he said.
'Small consolation'

In 1986 the chain 'disallowed' Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal for Argentina against England and refunded stakes. Paddy Power is to refund more than £200,000 in stakes. "I know its small consolation but we're refunding 110,000 euros to all those who backed Ireland to qualify for next years Finals as well as refunding 140,000 euros on the game after we pledged to refund all losing first/last goalscorer, correct score & scorecast bets placed on the match if Ireland won the game in 90-minutes," the chain's blog said.

I don't watch football (can't stand it) but having seen the evidence on the news clip there is no way this is fair. There should at least be a replay. IF (as seems probable) France go through then I hope they are booted out of the world cup at the first possible time. Cheats should not be seen to prosper.

I don't care who goes through as long as they get through fairly, but Ireland losing out because Henry enabled France to get the goal by 'CHEATING,' makes me sick to my stomach.

If England had been in the quarter finals of the world cup, and WE had done this, the goal would have been discounted. England HAVE had goals discounted for less than this, yet FRANCE go through.

Ireland should have a rematch between them and France, or bloody well be declared the winners. I feel so sorry for the Irish. I hope France get booted out in the first few matches in the world cup! Poor Ireland.

I'm Irish by the way and watched the match. I was just as gutted as anyone else but I also have the sense to see that they stood back and didn't play in Croke Park. It left us chasing the game last night. Why didn't they play like they did last night in every other game?

Tayto, are you serious?? Ireland were all over France ion the 2 legs!! France only scored the last time due to a defensive error as the goal resulted from a deflection from the defender!

As he does all the time Meaty. I'm as gutted as everyone else but it's not a great team.
I can't understand how the Officials didn't see it but thems the breaks. Hopefully incidents like this and the diving can be stamped out because Soccer has become a bore in the last number of years. They're all pussies in my opinion.

I quite like France and was annoyed when these two were drawn together. The whole process was questionable. But yes we would have been annoyed with any other team who had cheated.

if this was a match between France and England I'd understand that statement but I'm not aware that the French and us Irish disliked each other

I do agree that Ireland didn't play their best but they still played France off the field in both games IMO

.

Nothing will be done by the governing authorities because it suits them that a country like France who can produce more revenue are still in the competition.

All I can say is God Bless Ireland
