I get it all the time at work, and it took me ages to click as to what it means.

It apparently means 'knock your price down'.

Sharpen your pencil as you are going to have to rub the price out a lot.

The reason I am asking is because Mr C said it to someone today and they didn't have a clue what he meant, so I was wondering is it a NE thing?

I had no idea, but I would probably tell them that lead is bad for you which is why I use a fountain pen.

Hubby uses the phrase, "sharpen your pencil" - usually when he's talking to car salesmen.

Never heard of it .We use sharpest tack.

  I've been known to do likewise.  Really puts them off their stride when a woman talks to them that way.

It will be a he, and he will be called Jeremy.........Jeremy Beagle, (you probably need to be British to get the pun), but that is what he will be called.

Haven't read all the replies but I thought it meant along the lines of... sharpen up, how sharp and aware are you, wise up...then again I could be wrong lol.
