Zones 1-2 is about a fiver, you probably wont be going outside them if you're pub crawling around central London. TFL have a map with the zones on so you can see how many you need to buy for, their price list is here: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14416.aspx

If you're not going to be travelling before 9.30, buy an Oystercard, and it will automatically cap your usage at the cost of a one day travelcard, which I think is £5.60.  That will allow you to use as many buses, tubes, or trains as you want in Zones 1-3.

Oooh oooh I cant really help you with Convent Garden but there are a couple of pubs on the Mile End Road....The New Globe was pretty cool the last time I was there

The Crusting Pipe in Covent Gdn has a good atmosphere but rather pricey and I think only serves wine!

Just find a pub with seats available and stick with it.

That's my advice.
