Anyone any idea?  I have googled it..but get all sorts of garbage, like 'just a fiver a lesson,' and theres all sorts of catches, and some others say £15 to £25 a lesson, dependent on circumstances and offers etc.  Anyone recently had any?  My older girl is 17 soonish, and wants to start taking them.  Fanx

you tend to find most driving schools are around £25/£30 for a one hour in West Mids but if you book a series of lessons i.e. 10 you get a discount.  If you do opt for one lesson a week, they tend to want you to book a 2 hour slot rather than one hour, so that bumps the price up to £50/60

I need to learn to drive but can't afford it

My daughter has a great lady driving instructor (in Oxford though, so no use to you sparkles )

£25 an hour - she can have one hour lessons (like Pengles said, so many of them insist on two hour lessons), but there is no discount for block bookings.

My daughter has got her theory test soon *quiver*

you can get some places as I said where you can block book a few lessons and that ends up being cheaper.

I don't know if you have one of these near you but they are quite cheap for 10 lessons

Oh thanks rexi and Velvet too   £25 sounds about average then.  JEEEX<best start saving!

I had an instructor who was working towards his instructor qualification (if that makes sense)... they have to clock up so many hours..   so he only charged me £10 an hour.

I passed first time  (i was 23 at the time)

(he failed his instructor test, probably has passed it now, but I did feel sorry for him back then, as he was a fab instructor).

My daughter has gone through phases of wanting to learn to drive..   we have managed to dissuade her by pointing out that we can't afford to get her on the insurance for our cars, & certainly can't afford to get her her own car.     And by steering her towards London uni's next year... where a car is really not needed!

TBH... I just don't want her on the roads til she is older & less reckless.     say.. in 20 yrs or so

the other option is the 5 day intensive residential courses..     I think this may end up the cheaper option cos when I was learning there were weeks when I had pretty much forgotten everything from the last lesson .

there are instructors offering "semi intensive courses" whatever that means in your area...

Oh blimey though Ditty - my daughter is at uni in London - her accommodation is three times the cost of my son's (south coast) and the cost of living is soooo much higher

there is a room all ready for her at my brother in laws flat (in Kilburn)...   huge incentive for us to get her into a London uni, not only will we have to force them to take money for her keep..  but we have two of MrD's brothers living with her, spoiling her & generally looking out for her.

Good move My daughter was going into halls come what may and damn the price and the overdraft

She'd have hated to live with family (not that we know anyone in London, so it wasn't an option!)

On the plus side - there are obviously loads of part time jobs in London - so she supplements her loan (thank Gawd)

Rexi

oh, Ickle knows  a good thing when she sees it.    MrD's brothers have always doted on her!

the last two years as a sixth form boarder have meant she is so over the desire to go into halls or live with fellow students...  the novelty wears off after a while

& yes! to the part time jobs thing too!    she is applying for loads of jobs at the moment, and is prioritising places that have branches in london too, in the hope that she might be able to transfer to a London branch next year.

I don't know how the hell I passed!!   Honest, I completely cocked up the parallel parking, & caused an oncoming car to emergency stop cos I pulled out of a t-junction infront of it!

I learned more in my first year on the road after passing my test than I did during my lessons.

IF (& its a big IF) I end up involved in either of the kids quest to drive, then any contribution from us will come with the condition that they complete a couple of supplemental courses (aquaplaning, driving in the dark etc)

I picked the form up for my daughter to apply the other day but TBH i don't see the point at the moment cause i can't afford a car for myself never mind her  but i think when they reach 17 they all want too to try it, daughter came home from college today and say's she has been put forward for a trip to Gambi (sp) gulp, i don't like this growing up thing
