the vans will pick up your signal, i suspect
I'm sure years ago it was just an invention to scare us but surely the technology is available now, whether they employ it or not is anybody's guess.

It's almost completely done by a database and stroppy letter now.
If your address is not on the database they write to ask why you haven't bought a licence. If you buy a TV, PVR, or any other TV signal rx equipment then they write the same sort of letter.
They might knock on your door if you haven't got a licence. There's a few webpages explaining what to do if they knock on the door.

They look to see which address have no licence, then sit somewhere to pick up signals that tell them there are tvs on in your house. They must be able to, a firend of mine got done TWICE,she said it was a scam and after getting done once, she said they would never have the cheek to do her again and wouldnt find her cos she had moved guess what? they did
However, in what some see as a further example of state intrusion into everyday lives, the latest detector equipment is so sophisticated it can tell in 20 seconds from almost 200 feet away if a TV is being used in a property - and which room it is in.
Using the Global Positioning System satellite technology, the detectors are able to identify properties and match them with a database of 30million addresses to see if they are covered by a valid licence.

My OH says the telly is a receiver not a transmitter so it's not possible and that they go by the address and whether they have a record of a tv license or not.
Gosh you would think with the credit crunch they would let people off ....
What happens if they knock on your door?

Turn the TV off.
also if you buy a new TV your details are passed on to the license authority.

From my experience, many years ago as a student, they just ask you to sort a license sharpish (within a week or so). It's only if you don't that you get into bother.
Things could have changed since 1990 tho...

Wasnt ÂĢ2,000 then. But then the tv licence wasnt ÂĢ142.00 then either! I didnt realise it was that much, thats shocking!
well it's implicit if you have a telly you will have access to BBC and they are funded by the licence. I reckon it's fair enough. One single episode of Attenborough is worth it to me. Also Elaine Paige's Sunday showtunes on radio two (how fake geigh am I?)
What if your license is with your brother who is out of the country?quote:Originally posted by mozart:quote:Originally posted by pretty~cocoa~eyes:

Do you need a licence if you don't have a TV but watch online instead?

It's a con, and it's avoidable if you know what to do.

Not yet, but there has been talk about it hasnt there?
What if one doesnt watch the BBC channels? The other channels are commercially funded and have better programmesquote:Originally posted by jonono:

I have to agree with 'Canicant'. When you buy a new t.v. you are obliged to give the shop (currys, comet etc)your address details, if a licence is not known to that address then the detectors will be on your case.

Google is you friend. There are a number of websites about it. Basically, it's knowing your rights and what they can and can't do. They will try to intimidate but unless they have a warrant then they can't come in. No entry means they can't prove it, essentially.
One caleed at mine once, I'd just moved in and he tried to come into my house..I told him there was no way we was entering my house without my husband present to come back later, while he was gone I went and bought a lisence..He never called back cos his little computer told him I had one....
I get a letter from them every year even though I don't have to pay for a TV Licence

I got a letter at my work address when I had a TV receiver delivered there. They wrote the letter demanding to know why I had no licence at that address and threatening to come around. I love that now. It's a great opportunity to write a mocking and sarcastic letter inviting them to come so that you and all your work colleagues can stand outside and laugh.

It's something I have often wondered about. I didn't know there had already been talk about it but that doesn't surprise me.
My nana doesnt pay as she is nearly blind, but im suprised they dont charge her half cos she can still hear it
Did they inform you they would be visiting? They use the money to spend on their lavish BBC parties anywayquote:Originally posted by stonks:

According to today's media section ITV is on it's arse amidst crisis meetings. That leaves 4 + 5.
Otherwise for approx ÂĢ3 a week you get all thiose telly progs + Radio 1,2,3,4,5.
The least said about Local radio the better.
That makes me doubt this TV receiver theoryquote:Originally posted by Mentalist:

It used to be a bit of a scam, but their equipment is pretty accurate nowadays. The main thing to remember is that they assume everyone has a tv or pc that has a reciever these days. If you claim you don't they are not going to take your word for it and will check!

You go for it, let us know how you get on.If you get away with it, we will all ditch paying for it too!
