How to be a Woman by Caitlin Moran.        This book is still sitting on my bedside table..    I am getting nagged to read it...   you could read it, & then review it for me..     save me a job

I got bored with it after three chapters Ditty

Take 2!  I was looking for something to 'get lost in'  to see me through a late night plane journey where every other bugga was sleeping and where I, (who can't sleep anywhere other than a bed,) needed to be utterly absorbed to stop me twitching and becoming restless. It didn't fit that bill, but I've since read it and I would say that it is essential reading for anyone who thinks feminism, (like political correctness,) have become dirty words and also anyone who doesn't need converting but knows that sexism and discrimination are still v much alive and well, despite having become much more subtle and hidden.  It's a mix of autobiography and considerable humour without rancour, to deliver a message, and whilst I didn't necessarily agree with all of her views, I liked the overall message of feminism being about being polite and respectful and certainly not about hating men. I think it would be of interest to you Ditty and to lckle Ditty, so I'm with your bessie! There was a piece about if you want a job doing well, quickly, efficiently and without fuss, then best ask a v busy woman who is juggling work and family commitments: whilst she may have the odd day off because her kids are ill, you will also be rewarded in spades. That made me think of my FABULOUS admin' manager and also of you

And, there's a very amusing bit in it that I mentioned waaay up there!

Goes to look....there was a lot of humour that I really enjoyed Rexi and absoluteley no sense of blame: a very positive woman, (even though she does get on my nerves a little bit LOL!)

I'm about three quarters of the way through it, and have given it a rest for a couple of weeks though. She has fallen into the pattern of starting each chapter in autobiographical mode and ending it on a rant. I realised I was skipping all the rants - so thought I'd put her down for a bit!

Gooddit! Think we read the book in a not dissimilar way Rexi, however there are really important messages too. It kinda saddens me that the only way those can be really heard these days is when peppered with humour but hey ho!  We're living in a time where 'celebrity abuse' is currently being exposed left right and centre, where women are still judged by their looks, youthfulness and wardrobe in a way that men generally aren't, where the greatest suspicion seems to be: are these people making it up for compo and/or were they to blame; how awful it must be for these men who are 'falsely accused' rather than: people are coming forward because they think that there's just a chance that they will be believed/taken seriously.

I read that last week Sweet: bubblegum, chick lit, Mills and Boom fodder, (not that I've ever read a MnB but imagine it's similar?)... All will be well if we meet the man of our dreams, overcome adversity and have great, enduring female friendships and live happily ever after. Did I enjoy it despite being slightly irritated by how far fetched it was? Hell yes, but we all love a 'happily ever after' story!

just while I see this thread resurrected..... I'm finally wading through the Ya Yas!   Agree with supes that I might have given up in the early stages if it hadn't such glowing references as I found it really slow to begin with - I'm about half way now though and I'm finally wanting to read the rest  (haven't got to the elephant bit)
