I like a bit of escapism! So, here's a challenge: can anyone find a sci-fi type novel that I might like? Maybe I should try some Margaret Atwood? I hated her poetry but The Robber Bride is in my top 10 novels

Handmaids Tale? Margaret Attwood - that's a good one.

Ben Elton - Two Brothers

Very, very funny ... You will never be able to listen to China in your Hands again without bursting into laughter.

I'm about three quarters of the way through it, and have given it a rest for a couple of weeks though. She has fallen into the pattern of starting each chapter in autobiographical mode and ending it on a rant. I realised I was skipping all the rants - so thought I'd put her down for a bit!

The Bookseller of Khabul

The Kite Runner

Captain Correlli's Mandolin

Snow Falling on Cedars

Kite Runner is one of my favourite books of the last many years. I hated Captain Correlli's Mandolin with a passion. It demanded far too much effort for very little satisfaction. Self-indulgent claptrap.  I know, I'm in a minority about that book!

Good holiday by the way?

Story told by a young girl 'Blessing' growing up in poverty in the Nile delta with her extended family. It's beautifully written and by turns tragic and v heart warming Soozy, I think you'll love it. Also, have you read The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out Of The Window and Disappeared? V different and v funny.

Lovely holiday thanks

yeah...   I get the feeling it'll do that to me too..     so it remains...   unread on my bedside table...     I use it for putting the cats bedtime treats on for her to crunch on

on the subject of books...

I really doubt these will be any of your lots cup of tea - but I have just read the last book in Michael Grants "Gone" series..   called Light.

I loved these books.   they are supposedly for young readers, but don't be misled..   they are seriously gruesome!   and funny.      and a little bit sick!      He really did tap into the mind of a typical youth of today..

Post apocalypse survival is the new trend for fantasy reading (thankfully..   even I was getting fed up with sparkly vampire stories)

Take 2!  I was looking for something to 'get lost in'  to see me through a late night plane journey where every other bugga was sleeping and where I, (who can't sleep anywhere other than a bed,) needed to be utterly absorbed to stop me twitching and becoming restless. It didn't fit that bill, but I've since read it and I would say that it is essential reading for anyone who thinks feminism, (like political correctness,) have become dirty words and also anyone who doesn't need converting but knows that sexism and discrimination are still v much alive and well, despite having become much more subtle and hidden.  It's a mix of autobiography and considerable humour without rancour, to deliver a message, and whilst I didn't necessarily agree with all of her views, I liked the overall message of feminism being about being polite and respectful and certainly not about hating men. I think it would be of interest to you Ditty and to lckle Ditty, so I'm with your bessie! There was a piece about if you want a job doing well, quickly, efficiently and without fuss, then best ask a v busy woman who is juggling work and family commitments: whilst she may have the odd day off because her kids are ill, you will also be rewarded in spades. That made me think of my FABULOUS admin' manager and also of you
