It sounds perfectly normal to me SeΓ±ora because I did exactly the same . I have been into my local store tonight and come out with Β£40 worth of CD's. All good value with 25% off.

Another round of store closures were announced a few days ago.

The 37 stores that are affected by the latest round of store closures are: Ashford, Basildon, Bolton, Cheltenham, East Kilbride, Enfield, Folkestone, Glasgow Argyle, Gloucester, Grimsby, Hatfield Galleria, Heathrow Terminal 5 - Departure Level, Heathrow Terminal 1, Heathrow Terminal 3, Heathrow Terminal 4, Hemel Hempstead, High Wycombe, Isle of Wight, Lancaster, Leadenhall, Mansfield, Middlesbrough, Newbury, Newcastle Silverlink, Newport, Nuneaton, Redditch, Salisbury, Scarborough, Southport, Stafford, Staines, Stockport, Swindon, Taunton, Torquay and Woking.

Although I'm not surprised that the Gloucester one is closing as it is a small store, the Cheltenham one is a much larger one. That means that apart from the small sections in the local W H Smiths stores, the only option here is to buy online.

That will leave 116 HMV stores open (until the next round of closures).

Report: Asda May Make a Bid for HMV

13th March

It's been two months since HMV declared bankruptcy and appointed administrators in a last ditch effort to save the company. Eight weeks on, the company's fate is still unclear. However, there could be light at the end of the tunnel. According to the latest reports, UK retailer Asda may be able to save HMV.

According to the London Telegraph, Asda, which sells groceries as well as books, toys, clothes, DVDs, and electronics, is in talks with HMV administrator Deloitte about taking over the ailing DVD and music retailer. As previously reported, Hilco, the company that bought HMV's Canadian operation two years ago, acquired HMV's debt and it was looking likely the company would acquire HMV UK as well. The Telegraph now says that Asda could launch a late bid to buy the high street music retailer.

Neither Asda nor Deloitte have commented on the rumors, and Hilco and HMV are keeping schtum as well. Since going into administration, HMV and Deloitte have announced a sizable number of redundancies as well as numerous store closures. The first round saw a third of the UK's HMV locations close, while a second round of closures saw a further 37 stores close their doors. Still, with both Hilco and Asda apparently eager to make something of HMV (and Elton John, too), things are looking good for the HMV brand.

There is plenty of new stock arriving at my local stores. They have signs up for the new Depeche Mode album next week and have already stocked the new Bowie album. I have to make a trip tomorrow, will see if they have the Bon Jovi album at mine.

I am similar. Tomorrow I am picking up the new album by John Grant - Pale Green Ghosts (see music thread for his latest track I posted). Along with any other bits and bobs I can find. I don't mind buying some items from websites too, but again it's the browsing and ability to impulse purchase I enjoy.

Love HMV shops

There is nothing like finding something that you desire at a good price is there. Being able to touch, read and assess products is better for me too than any website.

I know that HMV are not the cheapest, but they do have good offers on every so often. I think you ned to pick and choose your products.

The other upside is, I have had a number of on-line deliveries arrive a bit battered or worse for wear, you don't have that when you choose your own.

I usually go deluxe because they generally include either a second CD or a DVD. In the case of the CD I bought today, there was only Β£3 difference, so for me it was a no brainer. Also the extra CD has additional mixes of the track that made me buy the album along with some other tunes.

Some good news this morning on HMV:

Hilco has today completed the acquisition of the business and certain assets of HMV, the iconic entertainment retailer, from its Administrators, Deloitte.

The business includes 141 stores, 25 of which had previously been slated for closure by the Administrators, and approximately 2,500 employees. All nine Fopp stores are also included in the purchase.

Paul McGowan, CEO of Hilco, said: β€œWe have spent a number of weeks negotiating revised terms with landlords and the key suppliers to the business, all of whom have been supportive of our plans to maintain an entertainment retailer on the High Street.”

β€œWe hope to replicate some of the success we have had in the Canadian market with the HMV Canada business which we acquired almost two years ago and which is now trading strongly. The structural differences in the markets and the higher level of competition in the UK will prove additional challenges for the UK business but we believe it has a successful future ahead of it.”

The HMV UK business will initially be led by a Hilco team working alongside existing management. The Hilco team will be led by Ian Topping, formerly Chief Executive of the Steinhoff Group in the UK, and Henry Foster, an Investment Director at Hilco while Paul McGowan will take up the role of Chairman of the new business.

Ian Topping commented: β€œThis is an exciting investment for the Hilco team and we will be able to use some of the developments already progressed in Canada to restore HMV to health. We intend to reverse the earlier decisions to sell tablets and other devices in the stores and to reclaim the space for an enhanced music and visual range.”

β€œThe reaction of the British public to the administration of HMV shows a strong desire for the business to continue to trade and we hope to play a constructive part in delivering that.”

Hilco has also confirmed that it is in negotiations with a number of landlords with a view to re-establishing an HMV business in the Republic of Ireland after Receivers there closed the business shortly after their appointment.

Thanks for the update EL (I heard it on the news, but not had opportunity to upload the details myself).

I have to say that my local stores (both of them) have for a few weeks now felt like they were trading as normal. Plenty of new items coming in.

Some of it still a bit pricey, but hopefully the new owners will address that and make them more competative for a high street retailer and non Internet shopping alternative.

Also, I think it is good news for those still in employment with HMV, they should now have a bit more security and a positive future.
