Some people seem to be harping on about how expensive HMV are compared to other retailers. It is true, for some items they are, but as you say their deals (if you are prepared to wait and monitor their offers) can be very good. Unlike some, I don't have to have the CD or blu-ray on day of release, I will wait quite a long time to get what I want.

I saw a recent article that indicated some retailers (iTunes was cited) don't allow the gifting on of music. You were "loaning" it when you made your purchase. Things may have moved on since.

Yes you can hand it down. But have you noted where you made each purchase? Kept site log on details and receipts? Backed up all of your collection? made a list of everything you have purchased?

It's a shame that your son is not interested in your collection - over time he may change his mind - hopefully.

My friend has just bought a massive King Crimson's Larks tongues in Aspic box set - it's huge in content !!!

I do use Itunes but only for the odd song.  I'm a tactile person - I like to see the art work on the cover of an album and the lyrics and the thank yous - I personally like to feel the touch of what I'm buying.  I also like to browse and see what might take my fancy and like EC I'm more than prepared to wait to get a bargain

That is the big hurdle for me Pengy, I do love the physical product. I have even been buying lots of vinyl in recent years (sometimes I'm forced to as it was not available in any other format including downloads).

There is nothing like a leisurely brows through record racks is there

(Been busy) a minimal part of my music has been downloaded from iTunes, and they back it up. Every thing is backed up on two different computers and one portable hard drive. I used to have a vinyl collection across many shelves and indeed some of them were works of art, however about a decade ago I decided to go for the minimalist look. I know it's a cliche but I honestly don't think that there is as much interesting music nowadays. I download if someone buys me an iTunes card. So as mentioned elsewhere recent stuff included Goat, Hello Skinny, but otherwise I will be buying some early Soft Machine. HMV was wonderful for obtaining older stuff at decent prices. Larks Tongue inAspic is indeed a marvellous piece of work IMO.

I went in to my other local HMV today and I have to say it was packed with people. I'm not sure whether they think they are going to get a bargain or not, but there were queues at the tills.

I spotted a couple of terrible deals and really wanted to tell the manager that this "imagine me pointing to a grossly over priced box set" is exactly why you are going to continue to struggle.

Just so you know it was a Paul Simon box set priced at ÂĢ140 which will be reduced with the 25% off, but I can still go on-line and get it for around ÂĢ75.

So as you do click on one of the offers that appeals, and...

You get taken to their administrators page.

HMV - getting it wrong on so many levels - it's quite sad really.

Oops!      I have to say.....I should've realised something was up when I've been getting countless e-mails saying your points are about to expire

Do you mean pure points?

I have a fair few of them, but did not get any emails or I would have used them. I'm hanging on because if the administrators manage to keep them afloat they may honour the points you have accrued.

Yep, can't remember how many I have but you're right, they may honour them

At last count I had over 58,000. that would translate into a ÂĢ10 voucher and around 18,000 points remaining. Given that trade seems to be brisk in my stores I'm hoping a solution is found and that the website re-emerges, then we may be able to redeem our points.

I'm not going to lose sleep over it, would have been nice to use them, but worse things happen at sea!

Shoppers who bought HMV gift cards from Asda and Tesco can exchange them at face value for the supermarkets' own gift cards.

This week HMV became the latest high street store to fall into administration. The stricken firm has stopped accepting gift cards, although it's currently still trading (see the HMV administration

But supermarket giants Asda and Tesco say if you bought an HMV gift card from one of their stores and have proof of purchase, such as a receipt, you can exchange it for one of their own.

Although I think this is good news for the people holding HMV vouchers I am however sceptical about the supermarkets motivation. I think it is less to do with "goodwill" than getting more customers into their stores. There may be some who decide to do their grocery shop whilst in the store - ultimately spending more than the value of the vouchers.

HMV's joint administrators have confirmed that gift cards can be redeemed at stores in the chain from tomorrow (January 22).

Deloitte said that it was able to honour the vouchers after a more positive assessment of HMV's financial position.

The accountancy firm also said that proceeds raised by the entertainment retailer from charity releases, such as the Hillsborough Justice Collective single, will be paid in full as soon as possible.

It feels like the administrators make sell this business as a viable concern. You rarely if ever hear about businesses in this position accept gift vouchers! Let's hope they have turned a bit of a corner and can keep stores open and most of all keep the jobs safe.

Very difficult to find anyone who sells DVD's and CD's anymore.

I too have spent a lot of time, effort and money using the on-line service. I have also done the same in store (like the browsing).
