Although I've no interest in the Monarchy I thought that was rather endearing.
I read recently somewhere that everyone who writes to the Queen receives a reply. Ok it may or may not come from her personally but will have her signature. Would love to know sometime if Rodrigo receives a reply

yes yellow rose i read this as well he will get something back and it will be in house i would think depend how quick they send them out lol
I also have no interest in the monarchy. I think for outsiders it's something novel and they see it as reflecting a long history and tradition which their own state may not have. So I don't think it's a well thought out love of it necessarily.

prosperity has very little to do with it. Stability and tradition is more the reason behind it.
I adorrreee Hira...shes beautiful inside and out, and has not a bad bone in her body. She seemed so genuinely happy for Rodrigo

I understand what you are saying and I agree with you, But in this case I was talking specifically about Rodrigo and Hira, Brazil and Pakistan compared to the UK, about their reactions to the letter and the reason why I felt they responded in that way.

I think Hira and Rod are under the impression it will be delivered to the Queen herself and thats why they are so overwhelmed by it all. They dont realise it will, at the very best, be chucked in the post and end up in a pile of thousands on some secretary's desk.

I don't agree FT. The alternative to the Monarchy is the armoured cars going up to Buckingham Palace, and people who come to Britain recognise it as having a stable political system, with the Queen as its figurehead. Presidents just don't hack it and visitors see it as something fixed and permanent, non-changing and safe. There is something to be said for a tradition going back nearly a thousand years, a permanence with only one hiccup along the way. It was notable that only a few of the Brits knew who the Duke of Edinburgh was and so the Monarchy is taken for granted within Britain, but visitors admire it.

Well I suppose we don't know precisely the reasons why they respond in a particular way, they would have to be asked that personally. From Rodrigo I just get the impression that he wants to meet the Queen as he considers her an important person in an important position and no more than that. I'm not sure he has much knowledge about monarchy or it's development. Maybe he just sees it as a symbol in some way of things he thinks he likes about Britain. It's probably something he considers uniquely British like tea or other things.

This thread has got sidetracked a bit. I was never opening up a debate on whether monarchy is a good thing or not. I was speaking about why Rodrigo (and maybe Hira) find it so interesting and important. Of course we can only speculate why they do but I haven't heard them talk about the issues that you brought up there.

I guess abroad there is a certain image(s) of Britain that are used to denote Britishness time and again ............The Union Jack and The queen being amongst the most widelt used I guess.
I suppose like France it's the Eiffel Tower and Brazil that big angel over Rio de Janeiro - I guess it's quite rare to have a person in the identity as a lot of other countries change leaders quite frequently. The Queen has been head of state for so many yrars now that her face is synonomous with Britain I suppose.

The enclosed situation of the house and the pressure of the situation in there can exaggerate emotions though, so maybe in real life she might not have been quite so emotional.
