To be fair that's not exactly what she did. If she had stuck to it and spoken the truth (as she sees it) I would have said fair enough. But to say that and then imply she was joking leaves Sree with no where to go. He can't defend himself because it was a "joke" but he can't dismiss his doubts it is the truth either.

To be fair to him that conversation went on for a long long time. That was only the end of it. The bit where he mentions fans as well was only in reply to part of the conversation. It was Angel who brought up the subject about fans and how he would be perceived by the general public. He did SEEM to listen to her, thank goodness!
