Hi guys. Smiler

Been kind of absorbed last couple of days.
I installed Windows 7 (RC) on to my computer alongside XP.
It's free to download and use for a year or so. Then it stops working, and you've got to pay for a retail copy if you want to continue.
You get the Ultimate edition, so it's got all the bells and whistles.

Must say it's very impressive, and much smoother than XP on the same hardware.
It looks very similar to Vista, but seems to work a lot better. Cool
The only thing I can't get to work is printing over the network to the printer on my other XP machine.

Also I've been reading Ash's book.....oh! And getting a little work done as well. Big Grin

Sunshine and showers here today. I was all set to go out to do some work when we got a heavy downpour, so grass cutting was scratched for the day.

Anyway, enjoy your weekends. Smiler

Hi Suzie. Smiler
Yes I'm having fun (I suppose). Big Grin

I also like Yasmina.

Well I got a lot more done on my veg plot, glad the weather cleared up a bit.

Will wait till next weekend to plant the toms out I think, in case of frost.

Never heard of Windows 7 Emptybox, I think they are all as bad as the other, too many bad points and no good ones as far as I can see.
Can't even see how Vista is better than XP.
So what can a new one do that the existing can't?

BGT on in 20 minutes, wonder what great singer will appear tonight then. They must only show us 1% of all the acts that go on stage, no wonder we don't know what's going on.

You sound a bit disillusioned with Windows Hicky? I thought you were a fan? Big Grin

Windows 7 will be on public release at the end of this year or begining of next, but they've released it free for evaluation first.

I think my printer problem is because the printer is so old there are no Vista drivers available for it, let alone Win 7 ones.
It seems to install the XP driver OK, but it doesn't even put anything in the print queue.

The stupid thing is, it indicates that everything is OK. No error messages, and the troubleshooting doesn't find any problems, so i haven't much to go on. Frowner

It's only a minor point anyway, because the printer is connected to the XP box downstairs, and I have to go down to turn the printer on and put the correct paper in, so it's no more trouble to print using the XP machine, and file sharing works fine, so I can print over the network that way.
Just a nuisance.

Hi Emptybox.Smiler
It's not that i'm a fan or not of Windows, there's not a lot of options really.

Still can't see what Vista has got that XP doesn't except even more problems.

So what is Windows 7 supposed to do that's better than any other?.

How can Win7 put the drivers in for your printer if there isn't any?

And if an OS won't print it is a massive problem really.

Microsoft had to sign every driver for all the hardware for XP & Vista, how big a job is that?
And if they have to do it all over again for Win7, can't believe that.

Well, I'm sure you'll be pleased to learn that I've eventually got it to work with a lot of googling, and a driver supplied by Windows Update. Required a bit of jiggery-pokery to fool the Win 7 that it was a local printer I was using, rather than a network one. Big Grin

Ironically, file and printer sharing is one of the things that Win 7 is supposed to have improved on, but i think that's only if all your computers are running it. Roll Eyes

The main improvement of Win7 over Vista is that it runs faster and smoother on lower spec equipment.
It runs better than XP on this 3Â― year old box.
Also IE8 runs smoothly, whereas on XP I've found it very buggy.

But there's no dramatic improvement.
Unfortunately it's no more 'intelligent' than any other OS. Roll Eyes

What we really need is an OS that can diagnose and fix it's own problems, or at least give the user proper feedback on how to fix them, rather than giving obscure error messages or blue screen crashes. Probably a while off yet. Big Grin

Glad to hear you got your printer to work anyway.
I had to do a similar thing at work the other day, I couldn't connect to the A0 sheet printer, it just wouldn't print, it's on the network, I had to pretend it was a local printer to set up the IP address on a port, then tell it it was a network printer, something like that.

I've had no problem with IE since I removed Adobe Flash, if I need Flash I have it on Firefox so I just transfer the page to that to run a Flash video.

I wrote to Microsoft on one of their pages one day when it said how well did we do in helping solve a problem, I told them they didn't help at all, they have a pretty stupid OS that can have programs crash them and they don't even know what program it was and I said that if you don't know and you wrote the OS then how I am I supposed to know?
(I didn't get a reply)

I see you're thinking along the same lines as me. Big Grin

I think Win7 is generally better with drivers than Vista. It can use most Vista drivers, and quite a few XP drivers.
I got my sound card, USB wireless network adaptor and my TV card working using the XP drivers supplied, but the printer was more tricky. Big Grin
