If you are seeing a star that is to the right and slightly higher than Mars then it will be Regulus.

At the same time each night the moon will be a bit left of where it was the previous night. thus it gradually moves from west to south-west to south to south-east to east....and so on until it is in the west again and it all starts over again.

You mean that it moves all that way in ONE night?

Well, not quite as much as all the way from East to South, but a significant distance. Approximately 12.875 degrees.
