Get yerself out there and gaze at the stars.

I can see it from me sitting room window

Moon with one large star to the right and lower down

What is that?

The large one to the right is Venus and Jupiter is a bit more to the right and lower in the sky.

Fluffworthy - i see EXACTLY wot you are describing

Crescent moon - large bright star to right and below - then ... dull star lower and to the right of the bright star

you have got to, it will blow your mind.  I sort of had this thought that all the planets were huge and the stars smaller I know I know it sounds silly now I say it.  All I have to say is watch it  Wow!

We gain that impression because we see them all relative to each other AS WE SEE THEM as if they were on a flat surface, while in reality they are all at different dstances from us.

For instance, as we saw from Katty's You Tube clip, our sun is vastly bigger than the moon, yet it can be eclipsed by the moon. This is because of how far away the sun is, while the moon is relatively close. Similarly, the stars distances from us are measured in hundreds and thousands of light years, while the planets distances are measured in an approximation of a large amount of kilometers. Thus the planets all seem large while the stars seem very small.

For instance:-

Venus is the 3rd smallest planet (almost the same size as the Earth), whilst Jupiter is one of the largest, yet Venus seems bigger and brighter than Jupiter. This is because Venus is closer to us than the sun (at the moment), while Jupiter is about 5 times farther away than the sun.

If anyone's interested.....

The moon is in the south just now and can be seen - about a quarter to a third. Almost directly to the right - much further than last night - is Venus. It's lookingf very small just now, partly because it's still daylight and partly because of how high in the sky it is. It will appear to get larger as the night goes on.

It was something more like a Super-Duper Mega Giant!

Edit: Went back and had a look....it was just a Red Hypergiant.

The sun is still quite bright here, and I can't see the moon yet.

I can see it Yogi - maybe your sky's not as clear. It's pretty high, about as high as Mars was last night.

Oh, maybe I wasn't looking up high enough. *goes off to look again*

I found it, it's further to the left tonight.

The moon will appear to be further to the left each night/day until it ends up back in roughly the position in which it started - this takes approximately 28 days.

If it keeps going left, I'll end up in the field at the back of the houses to see it.

You are right, there's no sign of Mars tonight.

Thanks Fluffy.

I was out (locking the garage) after midnight last night and the sky was full of twinkling stars. It was beautiful.
