Theres a solar app Ducky that tells you how much sun your roof gets and for how long etc... very geeky

In fact there are millions of cool apps... what do i use mine for? Scrabble

The orangy star just above the word 'TAURUS' is Aldebaran, the one that's about the same level over to the left is Bellatrix and is part of Orion (the hunter). The bright star high up and slightly left of Venus is Capella, part of the constellation Auriga. The dim star level with Aldebaran and to it's right is part of the Pleiades - also knows as The Seven Sisters.

I stepped outside my front door last night at 9pm to go to work and ...

I SAW THE MOON

I nearly yelped 

It was there in the west - sliver of a crescent - wonderful !!!

I saw a beautiful crescent moon last night, with Venus and Jupiter (thanks Summer I wondered what those bright stars were) and thought of you Renton

Thank you.  I haven't quite managed to commit every last detail to memory, but I guess there's a fair amount tucked away in the 'Useless Information' compartment.

Feel free to share some of it with us. I think it's interesting - and make sure you tell us when we can spot some more planets in the night sky.

Mars is in the sky now too, It's quite high and following a bit behind the moon, Jupiter and Venus.

I ran outside to look.

I can see the moon, but not the planets. I'll look out again once it gets dark.

I've always wanted to see Saturn, is it going to be about any time soon?

Approximately the same time as last night, look to the west and you'll see that Jupiter is now to the right of the moon with Venus pretty much on top of the moon. Aldebaran is still to the left, but a bit higher. A bit more to the left - about SW - is the constellation Orion. One of the stars in Orion is called Rigel. It's quite a bright star and is about the same height in the sky as Jupiter and left again is another bright star at the same level, this is Sirius, the Dog Star (in the constellation Canis Major). about twice as high and a wee bit more left (we're looking south now)is Procyon - in Canis Minor - whoosh left again to the SE (about same level again)and you should be looking at Mars with a brightish star just to its right - that's Regulus, in the constellation Leo.

Just looked myself. I'm seeing the moon and Venus (above and slightly to the right, but it's too bright to see Jupiter yet.

Yes! I can see Venus now.

My neighbours are going to wonder what's up with me, as I keep dashing outside and looking up at the sky.

  I quite like the idea that they'll be wondering what the heck I'm doing - and I'm no tellin' them!.

Saturn rises tonight about 9:30, but it doesn't get very high, so depending on the conditions you might not be able to see it.

If I have succesfuly guided you to Mars, then Saturn will be in the same view, but while Mars is quite high Saturn will be quite low and a bit to the left. It has a star to it's right called Spica, constellation of Virgo.

Jupiter is there now.

Pluto rises in the SE about 3:30 tomorrow morning, but it doesn't get very high....and then the sun rises. Neptune and Mercury are there too, but they are so low and so close to the sun that there is very little chance of seeing them. Bear in mind though that the further south you are the higher in the sky some things might seem to you than to someone farther north.

I have just looked SE. There is one star showing - that is Mars.

I can see something above and to the left of Venus. Could that be Aldebaran?

I've got one star a little higher and a brighter one a lot higher.

It's a bit higher than Venus (but not as bright) and quite far to the left (about the same distance as Jupiter is from the moon), only on the left side of the moon and a lot higher. There's another little one now, to the left of that one.

Wonderful crescent moon tonight and Jupiter in all his glory shining through! Venus waning a bit.

Yes it's Aldebaran and the one to the left again is Bellatrix. There should be a brighter one to the left and slightly higher than Bellatrix. It's called Betelgeuse (Beetlejuice ) These two stars depict the shoulders of Orion.

Bellatrix is the upper bright stae on our righr and Betelgeuse is upper left.

Lower right is Rigel (his left knee) and lower left is Saiph (his right foot)

The three sloping stars are his belt and the bright fuzzy stuff (a nebula) is his dagger.
