First thing is, don't panic and delete/reinstall everything before you've exhausted the recovery options ... when we've worked those out.

I've got a problem with mine..any ideas welcome.I cant play any vids/games because my puters telling me I need to install the latest adobe(which I thought I had??).When I try to install it it appears to download but still nothing happens and it keeps asking me to install it again ???

That happens to me too...glad you asked! If I put a DVD in to play, the swirly patterns come up but no picture!!

You can download a operating system called Ubunta and install it over windows and it allows you to remove all your files, then install Windows again. If you do really need those files, make sure you do not format as it will wipe windows files off, but it's an easy way to get stuff of your computer when need be.

Lolls It is the whole operating system that appears to have gone...I only have internet and I have to get that sneakily....and to turn it off I have to switch it off on the back of the tower...

Oh I think that happened to me too. I think I ended up having to uninstall the old version completely, then installing the latest one from scratch.

right...Mr w says the virus we had removes a piece of registry code or summat, so this buggers the operating system....we could sort ours pretty easily becuase we were running the operating system off a different hardrive to the rest of the stuff we had stored on our pooter...so it might be easily repairable if you have partitioned stuff, but if it's all running off the same hardrive without being seperated you might have lost the lot...

Did you try running an online virus scan Croc?

I did and it says there are virus's (well the same one) in four files that apparently no longer exist!

Are you running Windows XP and are you reading this by using Internet Explorer? If so then what happens when you type C:\ into the address bar?

Well, it's not good. The most positive thing is that you seem to be able to run your internet browser, which presumably is stored on your hard drive, so the hard drive must be okay at the hardware level and the data readable (and writable) on at least some of it.

You really need to find or borrow a Windows CD and boot from it without reinstalling anything. From that, you can look at your hard drive through a command window at least and copy important files of it before reinstalling. For that reason alone, it's worth taking your time with this.

If your PC doesn't normally check if a bootable CD is available before booting from the hard drive then you will need to go into the bios to change the settings.

It sounds like a reinstall will be required and it sounds like a virus has attacked it. The important thing is to get whatever personal files you can off it before then.

If you're brave and you have another PC then you could put the hard drive out of this PC into that one, boot normally, and read it that way as a D: drive or whatever. However, you should back up all your data on that PC in case the virus jumps!!!

hmmm... well in order to be able to get on the internet XP is running in some shape or form. I assume you just have the one C drive?

When you feel like it I would reboot and hit the Del key or what ever will bring up the setup screens .. have a trawl through those pages and see if you can find a processor temperature entry... make sure it is not hot enough to cook your tea on ..

If you hit the window key do you get the start menu up.. and if you can get FB running come and shout at me there

and another thing.. if you can get on the internet can you use a web based email account hotmail,yahoo, gmail.. to send the files your are trying to save to another web based account? .. if you try and attach a file can you see any folders etc?

I get on the internet though by doing contrl+ ALT + DEl and then putting google in the run thing and once I have that all my favourites are still there....

If i hit the window key I get nothing....

I'll see if I can email a file from one of my accounts to another...If i can remember passwords to get into them

Sorry to repeat myself but .....have you tried turning off and unplugging. It's worked for me before and someone else on here. It's gotta be worth a go.

Croc, we have a WONDERFUL computer man that we use in LEwisham. He has managed to sort out major problems for us on several occasions now, and has recovered all our data from two computers in the past. If you want his number, let me know. His charges are reasonable too.

Well Thanks to Zaph I have managed to get to the Tax file which will save me a days work redoing it!!

Its now saved on my hotmail account (I attahced it with one account even though I couldn;t open it) and sent it to another and bingo it opened so its there...we can do that with anything else and save it before we do anythign else.

Cheers growley...but it looks like we have found a way to recover what i really need...and Hubby has loads backed up anyway...
