So it was fine earlier and then i went to the shop...came back turne dit on and all that comes up is my screensaver...no icons....not even a start bar....thought it had frozen so turned it off and on again and still nothing.

I managed to get on here through the help bit when you do ctrl+alt+del (which showed that virtually no processes were running)..so far so good but if I minimise this theres still nothing.

The help thing did say you could type in file names to get them up...I tried a few and it says none of them are there.

Help!!

If you have access to Task Manager, go to the File menu, select Run... a window pops up, type explorer.exe in the text box and hit enter.

It tells me it can't find it same as everything else

I'm on XP

Give me a mo & I'll post the instructions how to get access in safe mode.

Restart but keep pressing the F8 key this will bring you to 4 options
Choose

Safe Mode with Networking - This option loads the same processes as Safe Mode but also includes those that allow the networking functions in Windows XP to work. This is valuable if you may need to access the Internet or your local network while troubleshooting in Safe Mode.

Press start and choose accessories then system restore, choose an earlier date than today. also run a virus scan.

if all else fails Croc try the XP recovery disc.. you may lose all your files doing that tho Frowner

sounds like it has had a major crash if hardly any processes are running..

or also try to boot in safe mode first. .hit F8 when starting up and select safe mode or last working Windows configuration, if that is an option. .then run your virus checker etc Wink

Final recourse. . ring the IT son at Uni .. Good luck Thumbs Up

That should be a last resort, If Croc gets in in safe mode she can save all important stuff to a external disc.

yes I did say if all else fails use the recovery disc but try safe mode first.. Wink

Croc it could also be that the main fan has bust and the processor is too hot. .sometimes that can make the puter go kerplunk too..

tho am inclined to agree with Uni son it sounds a bit terminal.. Disappointed

oh and poor son waking him up like that Laugh

Nothing new to report...can get into safe mode but still cannot do a system restore...cos its not there!

On the internet thingy where you can save a page it gives me options to save as into my files which aren't accessible...including all the last years tax stuff I did just before we went on holiday and which my husband now informs me has hasn't backed up to virgin...he only saved photos WHICH HE ALSO HAS ON THE UPSTAIRS PC!!!!
Mad

Thankfully he has got the previous year saved on his memory stick so at least I have the template...but it means me logging a whole years petrols receipts!!

Hmmm, it happened to me on my Laptop a while back, I had to restore the whole thing to factory settings and wipe everything off....I had to press the F11 key as it was starting up, continuously....it made a strange beeping noise and then completely restored itself...

....have you got the instruction book that came with it...if needs be you may have to do that, may be a different 'boot' key on yours though!! Be warned, it'll wipe everything off...and is only a last resort!!!

I'm sure PC World could at least back everything up somehow! Nod

Oh dear! I'm quite lucky these days as I have a PC expert working on the floor above....Imran has been a life saver more than once...my work PC completely crashed, wouldn't let me access anything (like you)...he managed to save all my work off it and reprogram the whole thing!!! Thank the Lord for Imran!!!!Big Grin
