Then we'd be in the hands of people like that Steen twerp who couldn't understand why we plebs dared moan about working the longest hours in Europe just to pay for the upkeep of his sodding mansion and trees. We're all "jealous", y'know...

........ and, equally for the record, yes they do.

I worked with a girl who wanted to show her dogs but, because staff levels were low, she was refused leave at that time.

She promptly went to her GP, got a certificate stating she was suffering with depression and, hey-presto, she got signed off for 3 weeks!

She was a fool for having told the rest of us about the show dates and she was spotted duly showing her dogs in the show ring (when she was allegedly sick and never having shown signs of depression prior to that in any event)!

When my Mother died in unexpected circumstances, I was given three days compassionate leave and I was grateful for that but I would never have abused it and asked for more simply because I felt depressed.

I did feel very low indeed because it was such a shock but I would rather have been busy at work than moping about at home!

I've had times when I've reacted like that. But at others, I've found it much harder to cope. Every person (and every situation) is different. If we all reacted in the same way, every single time, we'd be robots! Smiler

NodI think if you carried out a poll on this forum you would find that most, if not all of us have been touched by depression, whether through illness, bereavement etc.

I'm not talking about waking up in the morning and feeling a bit down, I'm talking about not being able to function properly without medication.
If you have depression serious enough for a Doctor to sign you off, you are going to need medication and other types of therapy appropriate to your situation.

With all due respect then, you have never suffered with depression.
Depression is never simple and while it is better to try to keep yourself busy, some days it can be impossible to get out of bed and hold yourself together.

I can't manage my life day to day without anti-depressents, if I forget to take them, I feel the effects and so do my family.

From what has been said about L, it sounds as if she does have depression and is struggling, I went through similar when my 1st marriage broke up.

And just for the record, Dr's do not hand out sick notes wily nily...

Ditto what you said, everyone has their up's and downs but depression is a mental illness, an illness like any other, it's not simply being a bit down. i cant bear to get out of bed most days (i do ofc cos i have kids who keep me going...if i didn't have them, i dunno what would have happened to me by now).

now whether this woman L has depression or just feeling down we dont know. so i wouldn't like to judge.

i do think though that some doctors do sign them willy nilly, i know mine does as when i signed off sick he didn't even ask me any questions at all....just signed and hurried me out of his office Frowner
