I am about to change internet provider and need help. Could you please tell me how I can backup my emails and favourites? I was told by my current provider when I switch over I will lose my email account and therefore all my emails. I have no idea how to do this if you or anyone else can give me, idiot proof instructions I would be most grateful. In case you think of something else that I should be doing as well could you please mention it.

Thanks Blue

Thanks Rexi and Yogi.

Tatty, I am currently with Tiscali and intend to switch over to BT. When I called Tiscali to ask them for a MAC code the guy told me once I move over to another provider I will lose my email account and I had better back up my emails or I will lose them too. I have no idea if he was telling me the right thing or not, I just can not afford to lose all my emails and don’t fancy saving them either. I was hoping someone here could tell me how to do the backing up. I have already managed to save my address book but no idea how to do the favourites or emails.

you obviously have a tiscali email addie? you could save them to file, and you said saved your contacts so thats good.
but. i would get a new email provider now, and forward all your fav, mails to there, so get say hotmail, i use that i love it! and its live if you like i can send you a PM with what you need to do and links, let me know, and i will do it tomorrow, no problem.

Thanks again Tatty, I already have a hotmail account which I do not use. My problem is I have well over 1000 emails that are very important, course correspondents and other useless but important emails. I know there is a way of backing up emails I did it many moons ago but have forgotten how I did it. Red Face Big Grin

Blue Diamond - are you using Outlook - or Outlook Express, or something else for your email?

Outlook Express.

Blue Diamond I don't understand, if all your emails are kept in Outlook Express, ie In Box and Sent items they will still be there regardless of who your service provider is. When you get a new email address you just add it your account in Outlook. Your service provider does not own Outlook, you do, it came with your computer.

In Outlook you can import your e-mails can't you? You can also keep your old e-mail address if you want - just set up another account in Outlook with the original details. I would back everything up first though.

Thanks Jeanoj, I am not worried about the email account it is my existing emails that I would like to keep.

Go to File - then Export, you have two options, to export your messages and/or your address book. Just save them to disk or a stick, and Bob is your Auntie's thingamy Thumbs Up

Thanks Essex Angel, I have set up outlook express to receive my emails even though I can still access them through Tiscali’s website. Are you saying despite the change of Internet provider and losing my email account I would still be keeping my emails because they are in outlook Express? If that is the case I needn't worry then. Thats right Blue, once you have received or sent an email from Outlook Express only you can delete them. Servers can delete emails held on their sites but to delete from Outlook or Outlook Express once you've received, they would need to be sitting at your computer. Big Grin

You asked about keeping favourites what browser do you use?

Edit:

Also you wont be able to use your old email account once you move (this is why I use Yahoo because i dont ever have to change it). Make sure that you change your email account on any forums etc that you registered using your old email and tell everyone its changing. Smiler

Yes any emails in your outlook express will still be kept Smiler.
CaptVimes
I think that the Tiscali fella is on about Your email account, providers let you read your mail as WEBMAIL which is stored on their server, but most folk choose to read their mail through another utility like outlook or thunderbird which store copies of you mail on your HD.
Personally I use Gmail to read mail from my provider (vodafone) which I find easier cos I can access all my email accounts in one place on any tin with net access
If you're using Outlook Exp try: Tools>Options>Maintenance>Store Folder and see if your mails are actually there!
Hope this helps Smiler
